I fully understand what a cam phaser, what it does and where they are located. If I didn't know what one was, I certainly wouldn't be tackling it by myself. I have built many engines, transmissions, built and raced racecars even and restored a few cars and boats. I know what normal noise is versus abnormal.

Me too. It is my understanding the majority of people do not understand the system and think normal cam phaser noise is problematic, which it isn't. Annoyance, yes. Problem, no.

Seriously, I haven;t diagnosed this myself yet, but my truck has been taken to the dealership for this repair twice, and it still continues. Sounds exactly like pinging to me, once there is a vacuum loss. I need to throw the truck on the dyno and take a look at things underneath while in motion, (with a vacuum gauge hooked up as well) and see exactly what the **** is going on. It's obvious the stealerships cannot remedy this issue! FFS

Well imagine being in my shoes. I recently had a new short block put in due to an 05 fuel injector hanging open, hydrolocking the engine, all repairs covered under Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 07M08. Only the short block was replaced, the heads and everything else were salvaged, undamaged by the hydrolocked engine. I still have the cam phaser noise on a new block. :o

Wow! Is that a common problem to worry about now too, with the fuel injector sticking open?
You used the same cam phasers on the new short block, correct? Arent these things mounted on the the cams on the heads?

As long as my truck holds out until Dec. when I can go and get my Raptor 6.2 I ll be happy!

Short block repalcement doesn't replace the heads, only the block. The injector problem is only on 2005 vehicles with 5.4 3v engines. 07M08 covers the injector(s) failure and any damage caused by the failure. Mine was an injector stuck open which hydrolocked the engine, causing a snapped rod wedged in the combustion chamber.

Mine happened at around 72,ooo or so. You'll be covered up to 120,000 miles if one fails. I had the other 7 injectors changed anyway, peace of mind.
