UGHH! "transmission malfunction" and o/d light blinking
Hey guys,
Went mudding this weekend, just about done with the day and was pulling my buddy out from a tough spot, and I got a message in the message center saying "Transmission Malfunction" and the o/d light is blinking. The truck doesn't shift out of 3rd gear. When I manually put the shifter in 1st, the truck doesn't move. Other wise, the truck just takes a while to get up to speed starting out in 3rd gear. 04 5.4 4x4 Auto. HELP!!! |
My 00 Ranger did this, 1st gear was utterly gone and had to have the whole thing rebuilt. Sounds like you might be in the same boat as I was.

Depends on where you go to get it done. I waited a really long time to have it done, so 2nd gear was destroyed in that time. Cost about $1600 for a full rebuild.

1600 to 2000 it will cost, trannys toast

I wouldn't condemn the transmission without checking what codes have been stored and pulling the pan to see if there's any metal or debris.
If the transmission goes electronically dead, the PCM will default it to third and reverse only. It doesn't mean that something inside is broken. |

Mine cost ~2300 for a refurb ford tranny installed with a 100,000 mile warranty.

have a good look underneath at the harness and connector. if it is filled up with water/mud, or the harness got pulled out will cause same thing.

ah thank you guys! the last few posts have pretty positive, so i'm going to go and take a closer look and bring it into ford this morning for the codes.
