4.6 vs 5.4 Will I know the difference?

Alright so I'm looking to buy a 4x4 150 so I can lift it (mine is a 2x4) and the more I look the harder it is to push aside the 4.6 L V8. They are just so much easier to find in my price range.

How much of a difference does the 4.6L engine make in comparison to the 5.4L. I drive a 5.4 right now, will i be able to tell if I move down to a 4.6?

I guess I probably should have put this in the V8 section, oh well, sorry guys

you will definitely feel the difference. you should go to a dealership and test drive the same f1 one with the 4.6 and one with the 5.4 and i assure you that you will feel the difference. however depending on what you plan to do with it the 4.6 might be all you need.

Yeah big difference, go test drive some but I'd get a 5.4 for sure.

Oh yeah, you'll feel a difference. If you regear it and add a few performance modifications, than the difference will be negligible.

But once I pay to have all that done I might as well have payed for a 5.4...I see what youre saying though. Thanks for the input guys.

231 bhp 4.6 + 5500' lbs = slowpokius maximus.

Exactly, word of thumb, keep the 4.6's in the reg cab 2WD's, and keep the 5.4's in big cab 4WD's.

What is the weight difference between a regular cab and supercab? Dosen't seem like it would be much.

Back on topic, pricewise depends on what you want to use the truck for. If towing and loading up the bed I would opt for the 5.4. I had the 4.6 in my '04 STX and it was pretty anemic, not that the 5.4 is a powerhouse but you will feel the difference when you drive. I had both to compare to ('05 and '06 5.4's).
Good luck in your decision.

It's actually 400-500 pounds with just the super cab. I can only imagine what the crew cab alone tacks on.

It really isn't a big deal. I had the 4.2 v6 in an XLT for two years. It was still a truck in all respects, I just couldn't keep up with the cars on the road anymore. I know my trailer towing was limited, but I never needed to tow anything over 5k anyhow. That may be why the 4.6 is so common.

I wouldn't be happy going from the 5.4 to 4.6..........(I currently drive the 5.4)
I've driven both.....seems like I had the 4.6 WOT a lot, but not the 5.4.

Just an opinion.

my 4.6 is completely capable and fits all my needs, but going from a 5.4 to a 4.6 might be rough.

I went from an 03 RAM with the hemi to an 06 XLT with the 4.6. Don't really need more than that for as little as I use the truck, but the 4.6 is slow considering how much these trucks weigh. I kind of wish I had gotten the 5.4. Trying to pass or running uphill with stuff in the bed is where you see the lack of power.

[EDIT] If it's going to be your daily driver, get the 5.4
