4.6 vs 5.4 Will I know the difference?
What are you getting for gas mileage, Cowboy?
I just got a 07 4.6 RCSB 2wd STX, my dad has a 05 F150 CrewCab FX4 with 5.4.. too me the difference in driving both is nothing really, my 07 Stx feels like it jumps off quicker.. now sure its a small V8 and it has decent torque but I would not get it in anything other than a Reg Cab F150 2wd ~maybe a 4wd RegCab - I wouldnt get a 4.6 in supercab or definately crewcab esp a 4x4 model alot more weight blah blah blah you know-- Im just sayn comparing them.. a RegCab 2wd with 4.6 to a CrewCab FX4/4x4 with 5.4 its pretty much the same-- power to weight ratio is obvious - Im liking my 4.6 RCSB 2wd so far enough power for me. Ive yet to pull anything but if I do all it will be is small stuff like fourwheeler on trailer,
If your wanting to lift though and put huge tires on it, with all that extra weight in tires and size as well- just go ahead an get a 4wd with 5.4 b.c you will need all the power you can get once you lift it... trust me.. Ive been there done that. If your doing a moderate lift only goin up a couple tire sizes to like 35s then a RegCab 4.6 4wd probably would be great for you, small little upgrades power wise will help-nothing extreme.

When the 4.6 is in a 2WD regular cab short bed truck and the 5.4 is in a 4WD crew cab, the 4.6 is going to be off the line quicker. The 5.4 will weigh in at around 1000 lb more than the 4.6, and the 4R75W transmission behind the 5.4 has more parasitic loss than the 4R70W that's behind the 4.6.
The best way to tell the difference is to put a 7000Lb., trailer behind both comprable sized trucks, one being a 4.6 the other a 5.4. Then you tell me if you feel a difference!......(LOL)......Right, I told you so!.....
You will feel a differnce between the 2 my old 2000 F150 had the 4.6 in it was a reg cab and 3.55 gears My current truck the 2005 F150 reg cab with the 5.4 and the 3.55 gears. Even with my 05 being a little heavyer it still is faster than what my old 2000 with the 4.6 ever was. Both trucks are 4x2 a very even comparison on the differnce of both engines from the 2 trucks I have had.

the XLT was a dog...pure and simple. It did the job, but it wasn't happy, and the 4.6 spent alot of time in the higher revs. We trailered a double axle trailer & car combo with both trucks. My truck was the preferred tow rig. Hands down.
IMO, only get the 4.6 if you pick up a Reg Cab. Scab or Screw should be 5.4 motor if possible. We all know budget dictates everything, but I'd hold out for a 5.4 or nothing personally

As you see Im comparing the difference I felt when driving two different trucks- a RCSB 4.6 2wd VS a 5.4 FX4 CrewCab- yeah theres pretty much no difference you can feel beside the 2wd starting off quicker, since the CrewCab and 4x4, weigh alot in difference- oh yeah, If you compare apples to apples a Crew Cab/Scab 4x4 with 4.6 Vs a Crew Cab/Scab 4x4 w/ 5.4.. duh .. you will tell a difference-
I would think a 4.6 supercab or crewcab 4x4 would be a dog if pulling stuff, but its what ever you need the truck for, they create trucks with different power ratios for a reason, only you the owner will decide if its enough power for what you have to use it for, but this 07 4.6 RCSB 2wd I have is just as powerful or quick compared to big heavy *** fx4 crewcab with a 5.4.. seriously, If your wanting to tow heavy stuff skip on f150 and get a desiel jst to save premature wear on your half ton drivetrain,

"powerful" relates to TORQUE........More TORQUE on the 5.4..........
I would think "quick" relates to speed......same body styles....5.4..more SPEED............this ain't rocket science.......it's whatever you're gonna use the truck for and if you'll be happy with that decision.
In my case when I was shopping the F150's........
I drove both, bought the 5.4.....just a personal preference, I guess.
You never said which 5.4. I presumed that you were talking about the 2 valve 5.4. Yes you can do that.
You CANNOT swap in the 3 valve 5.4. You would need the 4R75W transmission, the driveshaft, and the 9.75 rear axle. Then you would have to design custom made motor and transmission mounts.
