Painted my stock OEM 20's
Firstly, thanks to jlstang351 since I got the idea from him. I'm not buying ne tires like him since im getting rid of my OEM 20's in about 4 months to get some 18" rims and tires. I decided to go with a textured black paint rather than color matching my truck. He was right, it took me and the girlfriend a good 10-12hrs. to clean, sand, mask off, primer and paint the rims. the masking and sanding part is extremely time consuming and from a distance they look great. if you're really anal though as soon as you get up close you can see imperfections in the taped off areas and such but i love them and for $40 bucks and alot of time you have a "new to me" set of rims lol
Here is the list of things i bought: -3 cans of fine texture rustoleum black paint from home depot -2 cans of sandable black primer from autozone -some 400 grit sandpaper (used to get rid of some of the clear coat on the rims) -some wheel cleaner to start cleaning off the rims -roll of green tape from autozone to mask off the areas not being painted -an xacto knife to cut the taped areas -a red scuff pad from autozone that i used to scuff the primer before putting on the final color coat -some cheesecloth to pick up any dust/lint before painting. i didnt take alot of time for pics of the process since i got all the info from these two great threads: https://www.f150online.com/forums/20...ooks-sick.html https://www.f150online.com/forums/wh...k-warning.html now on to the pics: truck w/o tires: http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...934640x480.jpg before picture of the rim: http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...935640x480.jpg all taped up after sanding, ready for primer: http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...930640x480.jpg first rim done: http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...931640x480.jpg close up of the wheel cap(i removed the chrome lugs before painting, they come off pretty easy with a screwdriver): http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...932640x480.jpg closeup of some imperfections in my masking and cutting: http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...933640x480.jpg rim mounted on with wheel cap: http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...936640x480.jpg all done after 3 days: http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x...938640x480.jpg |
Looks damn good! I have thought about doing this, but I may just shoot for different wheels. Unfortunately, this is not a reversible mod....at least not cheap...

That turned out really nice. I like when people get original. Good job man...and very nice truck.

Looks Good! I've been on the fence for some time about doing this. I think the part I'm undecided on is to paint my caps or leave them.
