04-08 F150 Owners without a bug deflector question...
I used to get the wind whistle (on occasion) sound prior to installing the bug deflector. Now I never get the wind whistle with the deflector on.
Apparently the whistle is caused by the air traveling between the grille and grille surround. A bug deflector seals that gap.

I don't have a bug deflector, but I have a deer deflector. Two little whistles that mount in the bumper or grille(you can't see them) that emit a high pitched whistle that supposedly scares deer away from the highway. I frequently travel where there are lots of deer at night. Don't know if it works, but haven't hit one yet!

93k miles without one, and not a single chip on the hood. The only blemish on my hood is a tiny tiny blotch of tree sap that i swear will never come off.
My front bumper is a whole different story though.

Id rather have chips than a bug deflector. Whats the point of protecting the paint under a deflector anyway?
Ive got 49k on my '06 and I dont think theres any chips but Ive only had the truck clean twice since I bought it.

I put the 3M tape on my truck and the wife's Escape when we bought them new back in '05. While the tape on my truck was probably a waste of money (I've only put about 1900 miles on the vehicle in 3-1/2 years) it was a great investment on the Escape. I know for certain it has saved numerous chips on the leading edge of her hood!
However, if I were to do it over I wouldn't put the tape on my headlights or foglamps -- for some reason it is really tough to get bugs off of them if you happen to let your washes slide a little bit -- I think it's because the tape is relatively "soft" when compared to a painted surface.

no chips on my hood. have about 25k on the truck right now.
old truck, about 140k when i sold it, i had no chips on the hood, but i did have a big dent from a 2x4 hitting my hood while going down the interstate, but a bug deflector aint gonna help you there either.
and if you have a whistle that annoys you, then get louder exhaust to drown it out
