Dodged the Sparkplug Bullet Today

My 05 crew cab was approaching 30K so I decided to get all the stuff together to pull the plugs and put fresh ones in so I wouldn't have to worry about it in the near future. I got everything online, Motorcraft plugs, nickel anti-seize, aerokroil, the extraction tool and it all got here during the week. Heated up the engine and pulled the computer and coil packs after disconnecting the battery. Access to these plugs is a lot better than on my 2000 Lightning, those were a biotch. Cracked them loose and sprayed the aerokroil in for about a one hour soak. Then I slowly worked them around 180 deg so the other side would get nice and wet with the oil. I decided to use aerokroil because of it's carbon dissolving properties plus the lube factor. Ford says to use carburetor cleaner but where's the lube? These things creaked practically the whole way out which was unnerving but you also felt like as long as they creaked they were still together. I just took my time and took little baby steps working these things out. Took about two hours to get them all out but none broke. I used a nylon gun cleaning bore brush soaked in aerokroil to clean the head area holes and followed that up with patches to clean the oil up in the bores. Then I rigged up a rubber hose to vacuum out the holes before the new plugs went in. The new plugs went in very smooth and screwed all the way in by hand until seated, this convinced me that I had cleaned the holes pretty good. Put everything together and fired it up, a little bit of smoke but everything was fine. I'm convinced that the aerokroil was a big part of the success on removing these, along with taking it really slow and getting in touch with how the plugs felt as they were creaking their way out. Some were resisting more than other and I let those soak more. Trucks with more than 50K miles might benefit with soaking overnight. I noticed than the carbon on the old plugs almost wiped off completely after they had been sitting on a cart still wet with aerokroil after the job was over, about five hours later.

nice. and I appreciate the pictures showing those little bastards.

I think I'm next in line to change my plugs. I need to put the HT0 plug in mine, but I've been avoiding it since I'm scared of breakage.

I'll look up that aerokroil

Definitely got this one bookmarked for sure! I'll be sure and get all the parts mentioned especially the lubricant.

What plugs part# did you end up going with?

Congrats!

I think I'm in line to Tylus. I'm aiming for spring. Will probably be around 37k by then.

I went with PZT-14F (Motorcraft part number is SP-507). I got these at Rock auto for about $8 a piece. I got the kroil and nickel anti-seize from Amazon since I couldn't find any local. I got the removal tool from Matco and I'm keeping it since I'm going to do this again at 60K and who knows?
I'm going to have a few drinks tonight and savor my success.

If you don't mind do you think you could let me know when you're going to change your plugs out? Wouldn't mind seeing it done before I try tackling this job myself, heck maybe we could make a party of it and knock out both our trucks.
