Lightbulb Throttle Body Cleaning: Don't Do It!

So I am passing some info along in the hopes it will save someone about $500.

I noticed my gas mileage dropped about 1 mpg. I have 60,000 on my 04, so I pulled off my throttle body, gave it a squirt of B-12 and wiped off all the gunk from the inside.

When I reinstalled it, the truck would idle at about 1000 RPM.

I took it to the dealer and had to have the throttle body replaced. Seems I f'ed up the IAC and it doesn't come out; had to replace the whole thing.

in closing, don't pull off your throttle body and clean it. Leave it be and save some money!

I thought you could wipe it out, but spraying it can damage it.

2004-2009 does not have IAC at all.....

Fly by wire does not use IAC, just slightly opens and closes the throttle as requested by the PCM to maintain idle

unless you have a 2004 heritage truck, then disregard the above :o

The 1 mpg loss might have been due to 10% ethanol fuel. That's about what mine lost.

what were you spraying?

I cleaned mine using rubbing alcohol and compressed air. No problems at all.

Any chance you pulled a wire/connector by accident.

otherwise, agree with Patman

Rolling up on 150,000... Been reading about cleaning the TB, but the "Don't Do It" post has me nervous- I don't have 500$ to spend. Could you have messed up somewhere in the process Redneck911? I want to do it tomorrow, but...

B-12 is not meant for t-bodies. I use CRC air intake cleaner. Consider yourself lucky it didn't take out your 02 sensors.

B-12 CHEMTOOL®
CARBURETOR AND CHOKE CLEANER / AEROSOL
Quickly dissolves gum and varnish from carburetor, PCV valve, automatic choke, carburetor linkage and distributor shaft with High Energy Solvent Technology (H.E.S.T.). Improves driveability by removing deposits that cause rough idle and stalling.

Better not tell my throttle body that it shouldn't be cleaned. I have done so probably more times than you care to think with no ill effects. I have used choke cleaner, throttle body cleaner, CRC, and anything else that I happened to have on hand. Has never caused an issue with my O2 sensors. My truck has been on the dyno at least two dozen different times, and it would have showed up at least one of those times. The only O2 sensor issue I ever had was that the factory O2's were bad. Several times I have cleaned it while on the truck, even after installing the Roush charger.
Maybe I am just lucky

But then again, I change my O2's every 25,000 miles.

I used to be an accomplished auto tech but a change in carreers has left me out of the loop.

The only thing that seemed fishy about the whole thing is the drive by wire connection was snug when I took it off. After I plugged it back in it wasnt.

I couldnt see any bent or broken pins, but in the end, I think I broke something when I unplugged it.

Using anything other than electrical connector cleaner on MAF or other sensors will destroy the coatings on them.

That's why you should never use carb or intake cleaners on throttle bodies.

Marc, what do you get your 02's for ($)?

And I too cleaned my throttle body and posted pictures a while back with no ill effects, really made a difference in response. I am about to do it again considering I am getting some weird throttle activity. I think a spark plug may be going out.

All new Ford throttle bodies have a teflon coating on them. All you need is a paper towel, and light elbow grease.

It will come off with no chemicals with patience.
