Truck won't Start
 

Posted this in the engine forum but thought I may get a quicker response here.

The starter spins but won't engage the flywheel. I bought a new starter but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get to the third bolt. Does this sound like a starter problem or a fuse problem?

BTW, this is a 2005 4x4 Screw.

I had this happen to me on my 94. It sounds like a starter problem. As for installing the new starter, I can't help with that as I have never even looked at the starter on my 04.

This is probably your problem...

Recommend solution: I'd say find a way to get that old starter off, and put in the new one...

Starter Drive

A starter drive includes a pinion gear set that meshes the flywheel on the engine's crankshaft.

Starter drives often do not last the life of the starter motor. Replacing a starter drive is commonly done by technicians. Noise that can be heard coming from a starter is usually from the starter drive. The starter whines or grinds and does not turn the engine over reliably. Sometimes, the overrunning clutch will slip in one direction when it wears internally. It might only fail to work occasionally. Test it by trying to turn it in both directions.

Sometimes, it is necessary to wiggle the gear and lightly attempt to turn it to get it to slip.

To inspect the starter drive, start the engine.
If the starter motor sounds like it's turning but not engaging, or you hear a "zinging" noise, the starer drive is likely faulty.
Replace as necessary.

As far as getting the starter off with that nasty 3rd bolt...

That bolt is easiest to access through the wheel well with a long (about 20" or so) 3/8 extension and a 13mm swivel socket. I use a 3/8 impact wrench, zip and it's out.
