Wheel hop issues with Toyo 37's...
 

I posted in the super duty forum also but I need a quick answer so I figured some of you F150 guys has these tires also. I have 37 inch Toyo MT's on 20's and I am having a hell of a time with wheel hop in my rear. They already replaced the "bad" tire and its not as bad but still there. Did I just get another bad tire? Is this normal with these tires? Anything I can do to get rid of this annnnoying wheel hop? Im annoyed so bad...you would think for 600 a tire they would ride soft as hell!!!!

What do you mean by wheel hop? Is it bouncing while driving or is it skipping when giong around corners/acelerating. Traction bars would help wheel hop, but i dont know if your problem is the wheels bouncing or not.

wheel feels like its out of round. It hops while driving not while accelerating.

You can try and go to a shop that does road force balancing to check if it is out of round. When I think of wheel hop i think about axle hop. Where did you get the tires?

Sounds like a suspension problem, how are your shocks? Are they stock, are they leaking? Bad shock will cause wheel hop.

ya... IF you have a shock that is completely blown that could cause some problems.

Everything is new on my truck. I got these tires at 4wheelparts. Where would be a place that would know if a tire is out of round? Shouldnt they know that at 4wheelparts?

they are 37's so they aren't go to ride like silk but they shouldn't be that bad. take it a good balancing shop they will tell you. they may need to be trued.

here is somebody with a similiar problem. Also in San Diego. If you read it carefully, a couple guys give out a couple local places that helped them out.

what type of surfaces do you experience it on the most? pavement? highway asphalt?
I had a heck of a time with my tires on somehwat washboard sufaces.. where my trucks rearend would literally skip out from under me and leave me fighting with the steering wheel!
the resolution to MY particular problem was tire pressure!!! Where i thought I was correctly inflated at 57psi that was recomended by my tires mfg. ...... per email! it was actually to much psi and made for a heart pounding ride! :lol: I now make sure to only inflate to 48-50 psi.
sorry if it doesn't help, you, but it may be something as simple as that..
and my 4wheelparts counter, and phone salespeople told me to inflate my tires to whatever was on my sidewalls.. :lol: 55psi :confused:

buuuut.. I'm also only running 33's???

i agree with 05supercrew. also they may have stored/transported the suspect tires in an upright position causing an out of round condition, instead of laying them flat. Wheel hop can be experienced by anyone at anytime with any size tire.

Sounds like a problem with the balance, not wheel hop.Wheel hop is something completely different. It's when the axle tries to twise causing it to hop up and down. I'd find someone else to balance them with a road force balancer. My buddy has a F250 on 37 Toyo MTs on 22s and his truck rides smooth as glass ...

road force balancing would also make it so less weights are needed during balancing. Heck, I have heard of tire/wheel combo's that didn't require any weights and balanced true

Check to see if there is an excessive amount of weight to balance that tire, have the tire shop break it down and spin it 180 degrees. I have seen this help many times, but not always. Another thing you might have them check is the balance of the wheel itself. It could be out of round or bent.
