Oh oh, problem brewing....

Today I sat in my truck, turned the key and it cranked and cranked and would not start. It took three or four tries to start, each time cranking for 5-8 seconds. It has always (even in below zero weather) started right up.

The truck seemed to have plenty of juice to turn the motor over. And yes I have gas. I just clicked by 47000 miles. Does anyone have an idea of what may be wrong?

Thanks
mikebaby

Worn spark plugs can cause hard staring in cold weather.

With only 47k miles, I doubt this is the cause but it might be worth a look.

Also think about doing the fuel filter, again probably not causing the problem but won't hurt either.

That's the best I could come up with.

Fuel pump, plugged fuel filter, could be any number of things but I would just start eliminating things and you will find the problem.

1 can you here the fuel pump run when you turn the key?
2 Has the fuel filter ever been changed and how often?
3 Are you getting spark at the plugs?
4 Check fuel pressure at the fuel rail with a pressure guage? (can be rented)
5 Have you checked the fuse block under the hood and under the dash for popped fuses?

1) I wasn't listening for it, but everything sounded as it usually does.
2) About 1500 miles ago
3) I can only assume that there is spark. Once it started up, it was not misfireing
4) unknown
5) I did check the fuses later in the day, and everything seemed to be in order.

Thanks,
mikebaby

One thing you can do is do the following:

Do one startup where you turn the key and try to start it.

Do one startup where you turn the key wait 10 seconds, then try to start it.

Report back.

In reality, no matter if it gas or diesel, you are supposed to wait 5 to 10 seconds before cranking.

Most just turn the key and start it.

No harm done, but "technically" that is how you properly start a fuel injected vehicle.
