Question Cheap scan tool ....

Anyone know of a cheap ODBII scan tool that I can pick up to work on my 2004 3V 5.4L? I have searched and read on here that my truck uses Can Bus or something like that. Can i get one that is Can bus and non can bus so I can use it on my other vehicles. What are you guys using? Thanks for the help.

if you are just wanting to retrieve codes then get an obd2 scan tool from the auto parts. i think they sell cheap ones that even say ford on them.

I had found a couple on ebay for around the $100 mark. Seems like you get it a lot cheaper if it doesn't have to be CAN compliant. Do I need CAN protocol?

great find ... do you have any idea why it lists for a 2006? not 2004 on? did something happen in 2006 that I don't know about? On the verge of ordering this cause its the best deal yet.

Just get a Scangauge II. It pulls codes and has a trip computer and lots of gauge functions. Check it out at: www.scangauge.com

Don't really want anything permenant like that. Just want something to plug in, diagnose issue, and put away.

Wally mart sells them for around 100 bucks, or most parts stores sell the ones that only read out the code there like 40 bucks

I just searched for my vehicle to find the scanner, you can search for your model year to see what pulls up.

Gotcha .. didn't know that was specific to your search. Put my info in there, looks exactly the same only it says "Fits 2004 F-series". I think I will order this up and see how it works.

Thanks again

Harbor Freight www.harborfreight.com has several OBDII readers in the $35-$40 range. I bought the basic code reader from them 5 years ago for $40. It works great. Reads the code and resets the check engine light.

I recently purchased a Scangauge II with X gauge from an E-Bay vendor for $159.00 delivered. It will read and clear the codes on almost any vehicle built since 1996. You don't have to install it permanently. It also reads a lot of other stuff for Ford and GM vehicles. It can be programmed to read the exact voltage, engine temperature, head temperature, transmission fluid temperature, horsepower, torque at the torque converter, MPG, fuel pressure, RPM, MPH and many many other things. The codes for your Ford can be found at:
