engine ticking

I have a ticking sound coming from my valve covers it seems like on my 2005 5.4. When I took it to the dealership they told me they dont hear anything. He said he couldn't hear anything over the exhaust---- flowmasters---- but they aren't that loud. I can hear it plain as day. What should I tell them?

Well, the 2004+ 5.4 3V is noisier than previous mod motors, so some clattering/clacking at idle is normal, especially from the injectors. What you may be hearing is cam phaser noise - do you hear it when the engine is cold as well? If you idle it up to about 1500 rpm or so in park, is the noise still there?

when it is cold it is there, it is much more noticable in the drive thru with it echoing of the wall. if I race the motor up it is still there but not as loud

My '05 does the same thing and has since new - had the dealer look at it while still under warranty and when I was at 35,000 (Just before going out of warranty) and they said it is normal on this motor. I was worried about the cam phasers but the '05's supposedly don't have issues with these.

Keep it in the back of your mind, but don't lose any sleep over it.

I do enjoy the interesting looks from people from time to time (especially when it's cold) and I've been asked twice if mine was a Diesel (I wish!)
