Towed 9000lbs with a 4.6L

Finally moved from Dallas to LA. Total weight of trailer and truck: 15,500lbs. It was very slow climbing the mountain passess, but it did fine on flat roads. As you can see from the pic, the rear tires of the truck was almost touching the fender. (and that's with a weight distribution hitch and sway bar) The 4.6 is a capable engine, but if I see myself getting a diesel soon.

thats pretty impressive, nice to know that that the 4.6 is capable but...i dunno if i'd do it. Well its not like i have that much to tow but if i did i'd definatley consider a bigger engine/truck

I added a tyranny cooler in addition to the factory installed cooler. It never reached over 160F according to edge.

Glad to hear things went well for you... But that weight distribution hitch is NOT setup correct. When setup correctly, the front and rear of the truck should squat equally, or be within 1/2" of each other. I frequently tow an 8000 lbs travel trailer with a 1000 hitch weight, and the rear of my truck squats maybe 1/4" more than the front. When hooked up, looking solely at the truck, it looks as if it has no trailer attached to it.

Did you get pulled over at any time during the trip? Just curious cause to the lay person it may have seemed as if you were carting some illegals with the way the back end is sagging. (LOL)

Not bad though for the 4.6L! Gives me some hope for any potential big move that may come up down the road.

I also thought that the weight distribution hitch was installed incorrectly when I hooked it up, but a buddy of mine who also has one reinstalled it and it didn't made a difference. He said the weight in the trailer is unevenly distributed and made the tounge weight very heavy. The weight dis. hitch made a difference though because without it, the back tires was actually 1/4 inch from touching the truck.

Impressive. I think I would be scared to hit a bump. What size gears do you have?

Did you have trailer brakes....if not I betting stopping in a hurry was out of the question.

There is a guy that lives somewhere near me that pulls a pretty good size Ford tractor (way bigger than a 2000) with a reg cab 91ish F150. It looks like its all it can do to pull it, but he has been doing it for years. I keep expecting to hear he kit somebody and killed them though because he couldnt stop it.
