Help on 06 4 Wheel Drive!!!
 
About a month ago I purchased a 2006 F-150 Super Crew with the 5.4L V8 and flip on the fly 4 wheel drive. Now today during a snowstorm I went to flip it to 4 wheel drive and it wouldn't engage. It wouldn't make the clicking noise, I went outside and couldn't hear a vacume leak, nothing. I currently have 79,xxx miles on the vehicle and was wondering if anyone else might have had similar problem. I have an edge programmer. I first checked for any codes - Nothing, returned it to stock. Tried engaging the 4 wheel drive again - Nothing, checked for errors after driving the 5 miles back to my house - Again Nothing.

I called the dealership and they said that a module is probably going out and they would need the truck for about an hour for diagnostics.

Does anyone else have any info? I'm going to go out and look for the fuse panel again. It seems to be hidden on me compared to my old 94 F-150.

The fuse box is on the lower passenger side Stick you head in there and you will find it You have to remove a panel to get to it Are your 4h or 4l light up on the dash ? If they do lite up i dont think you have a fuse issue I just had my truck in All of the lights lite up but 4 wheel drive would not engage It turned out to be a broken rod in the transfer case ;)

I just checked and the lights do light up. So if it's not the fuse...


Also, about a week ago it wouldn't work for me, but then on the drive home it suddenly did. Weird?

Do a search on this forum There are plenty of issues posted about 4 wheel drive not engaging :thumbsup:

Had the exact same problem with my '06 as your experiencing. They had to replace my Transfer case shift motor. PN - 5L3Z*7G360*A

Not sure about your 4WD, but holy crap 79K miles on an '06?

Same problem I had with around 11,000 miles on my truck. It was the transfer case shift motor failed. Replaced under warranty.

Well I just got back from the Stealership, and the results are...

They were able to perform a code retrival and pulled codes C1980, C1979, and P1867. For some reason my Edge programmer pulled none of these codes :mad: Is that normal?

According to the bill, --- Pin Point Test Failed, IWE SOL. And Shift Motor Replace and Retest OK.

I ended up in the end being billed just shy of $500 after I told them their initial assesment of $600 was to high.

Never mind... I guess 79k would put you out of warranty.

I had the same problem with mine about 2 weeks ago in a bad snow storm. I checked the fuses, no lights on the dash in hi or low. My brakes were also acting up, almost like I had no power brakes and the abs kept kicking in no matter how lightly I pressed the pedal. I kept trying the brakes and 4WD switch while driving for about 20 km. I got to an area with a bit of traction and slammed on the brakes hard and suddenly the brakes felt normal again and the 4WD kicked in...its been fine ever since, but I am curious to know why it happened. The only thing I can think of was that everything was so packed full of snow that maybe some sensors were temporarily screwed up.

Maybe because even though they are trouble codes they are chassis diag codes just like body codes and the Edge is a generic code reader and might not be able to get all the codes and communicate with all the modules in the truck like an NGS scanner or whatever FoMoCo uses at the dealerships.

Would have guessed IWE. But why would that fail and the Motor? Sounds fishy. had my IWE done under warranty at 20K. Still $500 sounds fair.
