Red top is a regular type battery, yellow top is for deep cycle use. If you have a big stereo or accessories that put a heavy drain on the battery go with a yellow top. The life span of the average Optima can be anywhere from 5-8 years or longer.

Red top offers power on demand - right away power.
Yellow top offers power over a long period of time - power over time.

Red top charges fast - Yellow top takes longer to reach a full charge once deep cycled.

Red top has higher CCA than Yellow top.

I have a red top... love it!

I have this exact battery from this store-great battery-had it in my ranger, flipped it, banged up battery in process(came out of battery tray) and now has nice gash in bottom but not cracked so now it sits in the F150 with no problems at all

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

The other batteries I do believe are same group-but one is top post-one is top/side post-one is side post-and then you have diffferant CCA ratings-the one i have seems to be the best

I would not buy an Optima. I think every one we have sold at work comes back a year later completely dead. They leak and overheat. We discontinued selling them due to such a high return rate.

Want a great battery? DieHard Platinum. They call it revolutionary. They aren't lying.

I had a red top in my Cobra, but the next battery that I put in my F250 (pair of batteries) will be Odyssey. They are freakin' awesome. If they are good enough for the military to use in tanks, they are good enough for my vehicle.

Odyssey Batteries

2 Batteries in 1

Odyssey batteries combine in one box the characteristics of two separate batteries. It can deep cycle (be recharged) as well as provide enormous cranking power.

Military Grade

Only Hawker Odyssey batteries are based on the same battery technology offered by Hawker to the military for aircraft and tank batteries. Odyssey batteries are of military grade and have endured rigorous tests that demonstrate their overall ruggedness and exceptional tolerance of mechanical abuse.

Superior cranking and fast charge capability

The 5 second cranking power of Odyssey batteries is double to triple that of equally sized conventional batteries, even when the temperature is as low as - 40°C. Also, with simple constant voltage charging (alternator or independent charger), there is no limitation on the inrush current, so the user is assured of a fast charge.

That's minus 30 to minus 50 degrees fahrenheit!

Where's it get that cold!

Anyway, a big thumbs up for the Diehard.

However, I think the Diehard Platinum is a little overpriced [$180.00].

The Diehard Truck, SUV and Van is an awesome battery.... and $100.00 less than the Diehard Platinum.

I just priced out a Optima Yellow Top today. $150!!! What a DEAL! In my opinion it's worth the extra money to get a top of the line battery especially because it plays such an important role in our trucks. I've been stuck with a dead battery way too much, I'm not letting that happen again! Yellow Top all the way!

Diehard Gold's are a great battery too.

I just [very recently] installed one into my stepdaughter's car and a Truck, Van & SUV into my wife's and my truck.

DieHard Gold is the most popular battery we sell. They almost always make it past their three year warranty. Very high quality battery.

In Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada), they call it WINTERPEG. That's where his profile says he's from.

I hear it gets even colder than that there!

It sure can, -40C isn't unheard of. Winnipeg is the coldest city in Canada with our population size. -40 is the only point where the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales meet.
