How well do your AT's work?

The pic was taken on the dry end just at the beginning of a pipeline trail I sometimes run around here, I had not noticed that it was still very wet under the underbrush, and the ground had the consistency of split pea soup once I got up in the overgrowth. I grabbed a fist full of T-case lever, dropped it into 4hi, and just kind of walked her through the goo. My tires are BFG All Terrain TA K/Os in 285/70R17. And I must admit, with the mud I experienced THERE, I was happy with the performance of these tires... HOWEVER..

And I don't have any pics of this...

Last time I was out at San Louis Pass (Just south of Galveston Island Texas) on the beach, there is a spot where the trail turns up, off the sand, and onto pavement. I hit that spot and the tire voids pretty much instantly filled and would NOT clear out until I got out on the road and got some speed up...

So it looks like for the really thick, sticky, fish smelly, sandy mud, the BFG ATs are not the best tire. But they worked fantastically in thinner soupy conditions where I was dealing with slippery weeds, and grasses, not to mention downed tree limbs and such, that were too slick to walk on with hiking boots...

I am generally speaking happy with my tires, aside from the width. (I really wanted 33x12.50s, or as close as I could get).

Just wondering what other guys (and gals) think about their ATs. BFG, Toyo, Nitto, ProComp, whatever... Are you satisfied with them, or could they be better? Would you replace them with Mudders if you could? Why or why not?

I've got 33K miles on my ATs now, and they are about half worn. I keep thinking about bumping up to a 305 mud terrain tire of some sort, but maybe ATs are the right choice for me, just fishing for ideas here...

I have the Nitto T/G and they work good in the sand, trails, wet pavement and snow, but when it comes to mud its like im running slicks. You may want to look at some mud tires.

i've got the **** cepek fun country II's in a 33x12.50. they are amazing. they are more aggressive than any all-terrain but not as aggressive as a mud. they are a little loud on the highway but they more than make up for it in off-road performance. they really look beefy as well, with really cool side biters.

i used to have the stock bfg rugged trails and they sucked. there is this one very steep dirt/gravel hill that i'm always off-roading on and i always had to put the truck in 4 wheel drive to climb it cuz the rear tires would spin. after all, these are 6000 lb trucks!

with the cepek's, the truck just crawls up while still in 2 wheel drive. it's amazing. it's an excellent demonstration of what good off-road tires are capable of.

the cepek's are a tire that don't really get much fan fare on this site, and i don't know why. maybe they're too expensive for people. i've been running them for 50k km now, and there's no end in site for them.

Beautiful Truck !!
I always liked BFG AT radials, they seemed to be the best riding , wearing , all around tire on street 4X4, but you do have a point on the fish scum mud, they tend to pick it up like rolling a snowball. Stay outto there!:)
Some good old Ground Hawgs on some spare steelies for those trips. lol

I hadn't considered the DCs honestly, mostly because they are hard to find around here. The local 4wp can order them, but...

Oh, and the Rugged Trail / Long Trail both are nothing more than a highway tire, and not really good ones at that... I've owned the Long Trail and hated them...

Thanks for the kudos!

If I had a spare set of rims with tires to swap for the tough trips, I would be swapping tires back and forth instead of driving, and hunting, and fishing...

Do they make Ground Hawgs for a 17" or bigger rim?

love my toyo a/t's...only problem i have is they pick up lots of rocks.

there's a reason mud terrain tires are called mud terrains. ATs aren't designed for that incredibly soupy stuff. If you work out around that soupy crap near pipelines or telephone lines, then MTs are what you want.

My friend has an old landcruiser on BFG ATs and he has taken it through some pretty mucky crap, i was impressed. The tread was pretty worn on them too.

dbhost Nov 20, 2007 04:48 PM

It's actually not the soupy stuff I notice any real trouble with, but more the gloppy, sticky goo mud. The pipeline roads, and ranch roads are fine, the transition mud from beach sand to hard pack, and the sticky clay mud ever so prevalent here is where I have troubles...

And yeah, I am pretty sure I want MTs... But these ATs are wearing so well...

I have never had my Nitto TG's in any mud more than 3-4" deep, and for an A/T they seemed to do pretty good. The TG's work very well in the sand, and wet conditions. If I am going for any mud I always take my work truck, since it has a Detroit locker in the rear and an Aurbun posi up front and running 33X12.50 Kumho M/T's. The Kumhos work very well in almost every condition that I have had them in, mud, sand, deep snow, and rain.

I have the Toyo AT's. They seem to be pretty good so far on anything except for slick mud. I was on the way back to my deer stand and its old road mostly dirt and we had about 2 days of rain and these tires did not get any grip at all. The road slighty tilts to the left side and I had to put it in 4wd to keep from sliding off the left side of the road. Not good in the slick mud that is sitting on top a hard compacted dirt road. Besides that I think they are great tires but when it's time for new ones it's going to be the Toyo MT's. I've heard great things about them as far as wear and road noise.

TonkaTruck33 Nov 20, 2007 07:09 PM

ive had 2 AT'S and 1 MT
1. nitto terra grappler good for sand, rain, and.. thats it. on mud they aint worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin gettin it on.
2.kumho mt good for mud.. no sand, they dig up real fast. but on mud they are very good tires, wet conditions are pritty good too.
3. last ProComp At's are one of the only tires i will ever buy again. good on mud, sand, and wet conditions. after these wear out i will buy them again. not to be forgotten that these will last me about 50,000 miles.

Both my Toyo and BFG AT's do well off-road in anything but good 'ol Cajun country gumbo mud! I find on rock road's the BFG's like to throw rock's more than a 12 yr old boy. I had to put them inside the wheelwells not to tear up the sides of my truck. Both of them handle excellent in the rain but the nod goes to the BFG's for ride comfort and in the look's dept.(sidewalls), both great tires!

dbhost Nov 20, 2007 10:12 PM

I figured PawPaw would chime in.

For the record. I have BFG ATs, have had BFG ATs on at least 3 or 4 vehicles since the 1980s, and have always been happy with them, except for dealing with Mud. And yes I know there is a difference between an All Terrain tire, and a Mud Terrain tire. I love the looks of MTs, and how well they work in mud, but most mud tires tend to dig for China once you get them on sand, which is where most of my off roading is done, either on the beach (fishing trips) or through a sand deposit / washout on the way to the hunting lease...

I am quite a ways off from wearing out my BFG ATs, and have been extremely pleased with them like I mentioned above. However the size selections in 17" leave quite a bit to be desired. I can go with another set of 285s, which look awesome, and work really well, but aren't as wide as I want, nor as tall, or I could go with BFG 305/65R17s and get the additional width I am after, but lose sidewall height. I could also go with BFG 315/70R17 ATs like PawPaw has, but with my rims there is a VERY good chance of rubbing... (Most likely will with my 9" wide 4.75 B.S. rims...) I have a slight chance I won't rub due to the lack of fender flares, but that is a VERY slight chance...

There are some options such as a 305/70R17 Mud tire like Maxxis Buckshot, which look great, work great on mud, and on the road, but will dig really badly in the sand...

As far as the tires protruding beyond the sides of the truck, that is another issue. I will be adding some EGR flares, and paint them, and the toolbox to match with my tax return money in '08...

ditto on mine. gum up in river mud. However they've worked great in sand and several other kinds of stuff. Havn't tried them in snow yet but looks like I will in 2 days. lol

Very happy with them. I havn't done anything really extreme but I havn't been close to stuck yet.
