upgrade xl steering wheel to cruise

I've seen some people upgrade thier xl's steering wheel with one from xlt,etc which has cruise. then supposedly go down to ford have them set cruise to active in the computer. Will one with audio on it also work with the basic xl radio? or just the cruise?

Also anything special required to remove airbag from old put on new one?

thanks! shawn

opps sorry, its an 05 v6. I've seen a few posts on the web where they just switched it, but the dealer has to tell the ecu that cruise is present. Just looking to confirm from someone who's done it. Can't think of where i ran into it online...

thanks!

IIRC, the V6 models are different, you cannot just add the steering wheel and turn the cruise on. Something about how they are still cable driven throttles or???

I don't remember, perhaps someone can confirm...

EDIT: The wheel with audio controls will work if the procedure is the same as the V8 trucks, but the audio buttons will not control your radio. The wiring is not there.

2005 was the first year that Ford put electronic throttle on the 4.2L. You will need part# 4L3Z-9A818-AAA which is a speed control kit for a 2005 F150 V6. It should be everything you need to convert to cruise control and runs about $165. This kit does support the cluster speed control indicator light. Also, I would recommend getting it installed by a dealer. Hope this helps!

The kit for your truck is the same as above, part # 4L3Z-9A818-AAA. It also supports the cluster speed control indicator light for your 4.6L.
