The tray seals the felt gasket around the filter when it is clipped shut. The foam seal around th edge of the tray is just to stop hot air from the engine compartment from being sucked in around the edges of the tray.

When the cheap, and I mean REALLY cheap foam falls apart, you will have a droning sound when driving at highway speeds and you accelerate. I know this is a very old thread, but I bet there are a ton of folks who have this issue and don't even realize where the source of the problem is. I bought a roll of 1/2" X 3/8" thick weather stripping and replaced mine. World of difference.

Lots of remarks about idle related issues with the 5.4 and this seal failing...

I'm confident you won't need pics after this.

1. Raise the hood.
2. Pop the clips on the air filter tray.
3. Pull the tray out. (just like opening a drawer on a cabinet)
4. Look at the inside bottom and sides of the tray door. (it will be the cheap, deteriorated foam of which we speak, if any is left. If none remains, you will see the scotch tape like adhesive that once held the foam in place)

Might not be a bad idea to inspect your air filter while you are looking.

Will do.
I only ask for picture because I'd like to know what it was supposed to look like. My '06 came to me well used about 2 years ago and it was pretty neglected by the previous owner. "Ford Certified Pre Owned" did a few things really well, but IMHO they did an overall terrible job. So there's maybe a 10% chance one of techs replaced this already.

Here's mine. About a year ago I noticed that the original seal/weather stripping had rotted away. I replaced it with some felt I picked up from the hardware store.

Hmm. Mine fell apart before I changed to the Volant intake, but I never noticed anything wrong. Must be a hit or miss kind of deal.

I should have mentioned above that I did not notice a change in performance or sound before or after I repaired mine.
I did it just because it looked like it needed to be repaired.

I did this and it keeps the MAF clean, I also took off the Snorkel and cleaned off the end that fits under the Air Tray and wrapped it with Hockey Tape about three wraps around and got a better seal NO MORE MOAN
