i thought someone mentioned o2 sensors as a possibility? mine will do it sometimes but not always. usually under load like a hill or towing the tt or stepping on it some....it is not the phasers...that is definately a different sound...more of a knock if you have that. just wondering how easy it would be to actually change the o2's and where they are....just a thought.

The reason I ask is when I read this it sounds just like what mine is doing. I put it on the rack today and put it under a load but still could not figure out what it is. It sounds like an exhaust leak from inside but from underneath with it on the rack it was questionable. So i am clueless.

I wonder why mine only makes the noise while under load?

Thanks for posting the website with the videos. It provided a little insight on what my problem may "or may not" be.

What to do??? I have the same engine sounds- 06 5.4 w/35,500 and the dealer seems to be the least amount of help. This site is great though. I'm going to watch the video again just for some comfort...

Wow? I can't believe no one else suggest pinging?

That sounds like CLASSIC pinging. This usually starts to occur after a few years of CRAPPY gas in your engine. My Dad used to run crap Arco gas and every single car or truck he owned ended up pinging over time. I run Shell and don't have that problem.

Try running a few treatments of fuel system additive/cleaner, and switch to some quality gas for a few tank fulls. Then check back

Briging a post back from the dead...

Has anyone figure out what the issue with this sound is. My truck has also contracted this noise at 44k miles and is driving me nuts.

mine was an exhaust leak at the head. pretty common. not long to fix at dealer and walked away pretty cheaply (around 150 or so).

I'm praying that is all mine is. I'll have to schedule an appointment and find out what the damage is.

Any new updates on this? Mine has the same ticking noise from the passenger side. I thought it was the exhaust manifold, apparently so did my dealer. They replaced the right side manifold under my ESP warranty. I am still getting the noise. I hear the noise most pronounced when the engine is under slight load. To hear it the best I drive the truck at 50mph up a slight grade pressing the gas just enough to keep it from dropping out of overdrive. At speeds above that my exhaust and tire noise take over. My truck is a 2005 5.4 3v with 64700 miles. It's loud enough that a friend of mine asked what the noise was without me pointing it out, its not one of the normal 5.4 3v noises. I have another appointment at my dealer to take the service manager for a ride tomorrow. I'll report back. Any other insight would be greatly appreciated as I want to supercharge the truck but need to resolve this issue first.

Updates? Mine is doing this now. Sounds like an exhaust leak from outside but I think it's deceiving.

Wow, this is from awhile ago. I didnt even remember posting it.

Anyway, it ended up being a cracked passenger side exhaust manifold. Dealer replaced under warranty. Truck has been fine since.

This shows the importance of returning to your threads to update them with the outcome and possible resolution, because people are doing searches and still reading them two years later.

Sorry I forgot to update, here is the pm i sent to Big O FX4. "It turns out that I had 2 exhaust leaks. 1 at the exhaust manifold on the passenger side and 1 at the y pipe. Took 4 trips to the dealer to finally get it fixed. FYI, my truck has 68000 miles on it and all work was covered under my extended service plan. All that I had to pay was my deductible."
