Ticking sound in the Dash

Hey Fella's,

Got an 04Screw XLT 2wd with 4.6. Lately while on the interstate anytime I get above 60mph I here a steady tick--tick--tick coming from behind the guage cluster over towards the driverside door pillar. It's about the same sound as a "click" from a push button pen. Truck has just over 75k on her. Any idea's what the problem could be?

Thanks!
Tom

I've heard an intermittent sound that is VERY similar to what you've described. It drives me bonkers when it's doing it but, there's no rhyme or reason as to why it starts/stops.

Well, if anyone can figure out this mysterious noise... Please let me know! Friend of mine said something about it possibly being spedometer cable?? Havent had the time to really investigate that angle.

I guess as long as my tailgate doesnt fall off Im doing better than some!

Thanks for posting and letting me know Im not just hearing things!

have you pissed anyone off lately??? Perhaps you've seen the movie Speed???

Seriously though... my truck has a ticking noise coming from the dash area, but it is related to the roughness of the road so I think it might be different. I had it into a couple Ford dealers while it was under warranty and none of them could do a permanent fix. Basically they just kept wrapping more and more of my dash interior with stick-on felt but never fixed the problem.

Some day I'll pull the dash apart and see if I can find the problem... but for now I just crank up the stereo and/or ignore it.

I had a ticking sound under driver's side dash about 3 months after getting my truck too. After several attempts to isolate and correct the source I finally figured it out. The clue for me was the clicking stopped when I steered the wheel even slightly. With this in mind I sprayed liquid white grease lubricant on the steering shaft universal joint, rubber coupler and fire wall feed through. Was nice and quiet for over a year. When the ticking returned, I simply sprayed it again and all is good. While this may not be your problem, it only takes about 5 min to try... Good Luck!

put the stick on the left of the steering column to the center. pulling it up or down will start the ticking again.

Sorry.....couldn't help it.
