I have used Back to Black on my Mustang in the past and it worked for a few days but it always washed off. Has anyone used that dye product that claims it doesn't wash off? Just curious how those products work.

It dries white. It gets down in the grain and dries, leaving a white, faded look. Nearly impossible to get out.

If you are talking about Restore Black. I am into my second week of my first application. It looks much better, but it has not rained nor did I get to wash the truck this weekend. I have my doubts it will hold up to water on it. Also, it does not soak in, just lays on the surface. If it flakes off or washes off, I will try painting them next. I didn't realize how bad the rails looked till I got this dye stuff applied. Has really looked good up until now, I'm just afraid it will be running down the side of the truck when it rains.

Same thing that I have noticed when I use the 303 on my tonneau. I will usually wipe the excess on the bed rails and then when it rains it runs all down the side of the bed.

if the UV rays have deteriorated the plastic, i would think any "rub on fix" is going to last until the next rain. i had a jeep at one point with plastic fender flairs that were horribly faded. a guy on a jeep forum suggested to take a heat gun to the plastic. hold the gun about 3" away and keep it moving. sure enough, they looked almost brand new when i was done. it lasted much longer than products that never quite worked well in the first place, but once the UV damage is done, you're going to have to buy new ones down the line eventually.

Same here, and it is tough to get off without rewashing the truck. I had to tell the "detail" guys at my local carwash to do all the trim BUT the bedrails because of this

I shaved, sanded and painted mine and they great so far. I'm not sure that can spray paint is the way to go as that will fade very quickly. My only issue is they have already been scratched and the wax sticks in the scratches. I have a lariat and might go with the KR as I have the AZ Beige two tone. They are lite in color and may hold up better. If not I am going to get the diamond plat ones.

I asked the owner of a local truck accessory shop about diamond plate rails and he said one company made them but they looked like crap, he kept trying to sell me some bushwhacker ones and I don't think he ever told me who made the diamond plate ones.

So has anyone painted the caps/rails and had a good turnout?

I have the gold/tan caps on my KR, and I'm putting on a soft tonneau cover that doesn't cover the cap. I don't want the black cover, gold cap, black body look. I priced new black ones from Ford and they wanted $200 for the set (2 sides and tailgate). I was thinking of painting mine and hopefully being done, but don't want to screw them up if I can avoid it....

If your talking the bed caps (plastic peices covering the sides and tailgate) I was quoted $73.72 each for the sides and $47.34 ($194.78 + tax) for the tailgate cap yesterday from my local Ford Stealership. This is for the Carbon Black ones for a 5.5 bed on a screw.

Could you please post your results? I'd like to paint mine (or replace) before my cover is delivered next week, so I'm very interested in knowing the outcome.
