Ford Might Finally Replace My Transmission

Well, after 4 rebuilt transmissions in 20,000 miles and I'm still having problems with my transmission, Ford might finally replace my transmission.

I wrote a letter to the customer service department at Ford and told them the dealer has been unable to fix my transmission. This is the final step before I'm able to declare it a Lemon with the State of Texas. A regional service manager called me up and asked what I would deem a suitable repair. I told him I wouldn't be satisfied with any repair unless my transmission was replaced with a new one. He then told me they would determine if the truck was repairable or not and if it wasn't they would issue me a new truck

I also told him how unsatisfied I was with the 3rd repair attempt. The dealer attempted to patch the problem by installing heavier duty clutches in 1st and 2nd gear. Doesn't sound too bad, but it causes the truck to shift into 2nd gear way to early any it really bogs down in 2nd gear. So, the truck isn't programed to use higher friction clutches and it wasn't designed to use heavy duty clutches. I tried to tell them then I wanted a new transmission then, but the dealer refused to replace it.

Lets say Ford spent $2K on each rebuild attempt. They've already spent $8K trying to fix the problem, and are looking at probably spending another $5K on a new transmission. That's $13K on repairs on a 10 month old truck with 26000 miles, or about half what the truck is worth now.

The dealer is supposed to call in about a week to set up an appointment. I'll keep you informed of any developments.

They dont spend 2k on rebuilding a tranny. They might have a few hundred if that on each rebuild...

Each trans rebuild I do has a warranty cap... typically around the cost of a new trans... if it goes above that, it gets a new trans, if it's below that, it gets rebuilt... that's warranty policy... Ford doesn't care if the trans gets rebuilt 4 times for 2500 each on a trans that costs $3000. If it's not above their cost cap, it's getting a rebuild.

As far as your concern, you should of never had to go through 3 rebuilds and it is against warranty policy to use anything other than original OEM components so either they foot the bill for the clutches or they falsely documented the work.

I would have called the field rep in after the 2nd time and had him ok another trans, but that's because I don't like to pull those damn things and rebuild them over and over again.

I just received a call from my dealer and I do have a new transmission on order right now. They said it could be installed the same day. Hopefully, this will be the end of my troubles. If I have any more transmission related issues in the next 5 months I'll be in a position to file a lemon law.

If this new transmission will last I'll keep this truck, because I do like everything else about it. However, Ford does need to redesign their transmissions, and I want a 5 or 6 speed tranny that won't take several seconds to decide to down shift. My next truck may not be a Ford if they don't improve the transmissions. I've driven the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan, and I absolutely love the way their transmission's shift. I don't want this to turn into a Ford vs Toyota and Nissan. This is just my opinion after driving those trucks. I bought the F150 because I thought it was definitely the better built truck, and it's only flaw was the transmission.

The way I see it, it is not a Ford vs anybody issue, it's Freedom of Choice.
I almost bought Dodge 1500 back in 2004. I like my F-150, but also like the Dodge as well.

Well good for you, most do shift fine. Do you want a cookie?

Hopefully your new trans. will be much better than the original. I would also check what kind of warranty coverage is on the new one. Good luck

What was wrong with the tranny the first time you took it to the dealer?

During the 1st to 2nd gear shift there would be a grinding noise accompanied by a shudder in the drive train. It feels like it only halfway engages 2nd gear. Oh, and it only occurs at very light throttle situations such as driving in heavy traffic. Also, the problem seems to occur more after a long drive of 350 miles and then getting into traffic. What's weird is that if you let it sit for a few hours the problem goes away. I'm thinking something is overheating, but I do have the towing package with the transmission cooler.

Back to the tranny, I had one rebuilt at 40k miles and the rebuilt totaly blew up at 46k.. I had my truck at the stealer for 11days befor I had conviced them for a remand tranny n not a rebuilt.. Still trying to get a new driveshalf out of them but they tell me its fine, which I know its not cause my bed shakes all ovr even on stock 18's. Best of luck with the new tranny, mine still shifts funny but they tell me its cause of my LED tails makeing my brake switch go on

Apparently you lack the skills of reading comprehension. The OP said that Ford needed to work on their transmissions. Inferring that all Ford transmissions are fault when that simply isn't the case. Now go play with a muddy pig!

This is coming from the guy who believes that 289 rwhp is possible with the Big 3. . Sorry but no one asked for the Peanut Gallery response so go back to time out. When the big boys are done playing, we'll call you. Thank you.

Ouch what's with the name calling....why am I a pig? Your post pretty much came off like you were being a jackass with the "hmm" at the beginning and not having any useful info after that except that your trans is prefect. Well most of them are so what was your point.(I understand what you're saying above with the inferred point but it still sounded like a jackazz). Anyway I was just kinding around with the cookie but if you would like one I can ship one out to ya .

Btw your truck is badazz and the Mustang is pretty slick.
