Cool Dealership said...

I ordered the handle with a built in keypad and installed it last week. The handle functions great but the keypad was inoperatable. I took it in to the dealership this morning and they tell me that my truck is not equipped with the proper VSM. I have the remote entry and the 5 digit code my truck came with. The tech said that when he was searching through the VSM it had no option to turn the keypad on. Long story short for 500 bucks they could make it work.

Do you guys think that they are telling the truth or just trying to get money out of me???

Its a 2005 XLT with a build date of 12/04 if that matters

Does your truck have the remote keyfob? If so, your keypad shoule be easily reprogrammed to work...code is on the black box on the back wall of the cab.

I have the 5 digit "code" that came with my manual. The way the tech stated is that the security module didn't have an option to turn it on.

Its hard to get a second opinion in town because there are only two ford dealerships and they are sister dealerships and that guy runs back and forth between the two

I'm not sure where, but I'm pretty sure that I read that you can add it just like you would get a new remote keyless entry fob. Maybe in the user manual?

My 06 XLT didn't come with a key pad. When I installed my LT handles I didn't need to get anything programmed for the keypad to work.As soon as I plugged the keypad in it worked with the code.

My '04 is experiencing the same problem when I just installed the LT handles, the dealer says I could try an new (updated) VSM or try to turn that feature on in my PCM.

If your truck had the keypad on the original handle, and it worked, then you shouldn't need to have anything reprogrammed. I installed my LT handles and the keypad worked the same as it did before.

Does the LT driver's side handle come with the keypad?

I have a red XLT without the keypad, and I bought paint to match LT handles from E-bay and the driver side does not have the keypad just the holes.

Since I am going to have them painted any I will just order one from Ford if it includes the keypad.

Yes. Mine stockers had the keypad and the LTs I got have the keypad. When I put the LTs on I just unplugged the old, plugged in the new and it worked perfectly.

I originally did not have the key pad (I guess an early built new body style ??)...but I always had the key-fob keyless entry.

Reprogram (VSM)

Look at the following link.
It gives the service tech the exact instructions for reprogramming
the VSM. Should take at most 1/2 hour.

Yeah, one service guy is telling me that it can't be done within 5 seconds of talking to him..yeah thanks for thinking about that for me mr. service writer ! so he transfers me to the accessory guy that tells me I need the module to mount under my dash, after I tell him that it is a new body style '04 and the VSM is all ready on the back of my cab..I don't think he liked that I knew more than him so he told me I needed a module and a harness and some other stuff but I could not listen to him any more and was just waiting for him to stop so that I could tell him bye. I mean '04 is not that long ago..you would think they remember some of this crazy stuff or would be willing to take the time to look into it...must not be high enough profit margin for them to even care about I guess ?! I have the TSB now so I will talk someone in to looking into this for me !
