4.10's Price Quote... isit worth it?

I have a (2wd) 04 Screw with Stock 3.55's

Contemplating installing 4.10's.

The guys who have had this done let me know if the price is right! and how you like them.

Genuine Gear's (Ring/Pinion) 170.00
MasterInstall Pack(shims/bearings/ect) 82.00
Synthetic Gear Oil (2x's) 11.50
Labor $315.00

Lifetime Warranty on the gears, 90 day on the labor!

Total Cost
657.62

I run about 2,000rpm at 70mph. How much more will she turn with 4.10's. I am only running 17"rims with 265/70/17 Firestone Destinations. Just slightly bigger than stock. This should get me going quicker? She's dead off the line right now... just no get up and go. Will the gear swap help with this? Will I loose much MPG

One of the best mods I have done is going from 3.55 to 4.10s,,,love it!
That price is about right.
At 70 I'm running about 2300 to 2400 RPMs
Gas did not go down much!

That's a good price.

Second-best mod I've ever done was going from 3.31 to 4.10.
Performance will be better all around.
Much less gear hunting on the highway for small grades...it'll pull them in OD.

I run them with 285/60R18 street tires, which is close to stock.

Here's a thread with pictures of my speedo & tach at various speeds. You should be close:

If you have the coin, consider adding LSD while you're at it. The diff wll be apart anyways, so you'll save a bit on labor costs.

You'll also need to add the cost of a tuner which is about $350 if you don't already have one.

The gears themselves won't make it much quicker off the line. I would try the tuner before messing with gears and see how you like it from there.

I have the SuperChips 1714 Tuner and I can select multiple Gear Ratio, and Tire Size's. That should be all that's needed to recalibrate everything once I get the 4.10's installed..... correct?

Going from 3.55's to 4.10's with just a slightly bigger tire should help it quite a bit off the line? Shouldnt it!! Has to be better than it is now!

Here is a comparision chart of RPMS.

yes, switching to a lower gear set will get you off the line quicker.

Heck yes they will. It's pure math.

I went from 3.55 on my screw to 4.1 Ford Racing gears and it made a very noticeable gain off the line. I have since custom tuned it as well to correct the speedo as well.

To be honest, if you have another car to drive, and you are getting gears mostly for fun, go big and get 4.56. Now that I have a Focus too, I wish I had.

Is installing new gears that hard? I think I seen it done on one of those 4x4 tv shows and if I recall it was easy. One of my truckin' issues had that too but i'd have to ransack the house to find it.

Yes, it is. It requires extreme precision or you get humming and uneven wear- possibly even grenading of the gears.

installing gears is physically easy to do, but hard to do right! If the set up isn't perfect it'll whine like he^ said. Shop around a little and see if you can come up with a little better deal on install. good mod though!

Big difference with gears.
Bigger than a tuner IMHO.

Two similar trucks:
One with 35's 3.73 gears and a tuner (my bro-in-law's truck)
The other with 35's and 4.56 gears, no tuner (his buddy's truck)
The truck with gears smokes the truck with just a tuner.

Even us supercharged guys notice a big difference. :beers:
