15,000 Mile E-fan Checkup

It took almost a year but the e-fan mounting method has finally proven substandard. The mounting nails have rubbed a hole in the hose, causing a leak...so the shop tells me. I have my doubts as I've never seen any coolant leaking...if all of a sudden I have a leak the first time I take my truck to a shop it'll also be my last.

I recall this happening to bigtruck311 in his 03 F-150, took his 2 years. Is there any hope for repair or is replacement required now. I'll do the work ty very much. I just don't see how it happened so quick, the efans hardly even move. What are the radiator hoses made of?

Anybody have this problem besides me and bigtruck?

Surely you mean a radiator tube, not a hose.... You may or may not want to do this but I have seen many in the past just have the tube that is leaking sealed off. You still have the rest of them operating as designed...It is a thought and is far cheaper than replacement...

I cheaped-out when the mounting rods created a small leak...I used Barr's Stop Leak in the radiator and replaced the rods with the nylon ones at the same time.

I had my radiator flushed shortly thereafter, I didn't want the stop-leak circulating around too long.

It's been a few years now, and the leak hasn't returned.

This is precisely why I will NEVER mount anything that has to poke through the radiator. It is just a leak waiting to happen.

I ran my plastic zip ties straight through the radiator... snug as a bug for over a year now.

Not signs of breaking fins of anything else yet.

I am going to try the plastic zip ties if I have to replace the radiator. I can get one for $100. This just irritates me, I really have a suspicion they did this themselves, I haven't had a leak in forever. I went to the shop and looked in the engine bay, there is coolant on the pulley's. I just find it hard to believe my truck is spraying coolant that bad and I have NEVER found a leak, nor are my pullies ever wet. If all of a sudden it's leaking I'm going to do something about it.

They also ran accross a problem, they were removing the exhaust manifold and they broke a bolt in the head, they are saying it was probably already broke because of added stress caused by the leak on that particular bolt. Now they have to drill it out and are charging me extra for the time, should I fight this? I am absolutely never bringing it in to a shop again it smells fishy there.

What exactly was the situation here? How/why is it a at a shop?

Why were they removing an exhaust manifold? I had my truck at a shop a while back because I broke the rear end from wheel hop... Shop manager was giving me the run around about how they're gonna have to do " this and that".. talking to me like I was a 3rd grader...

I responded eventually with "Tell that guy to get my truck off the lift and call a flat bed up here to get my truck" and I walked out the door. Flat bed showed up in about 10 mins and I was out.

Radiator is really easy to remove/replace... find a junker at a junker yard with rear end or T-bone damage..

I had a loud ticking, it was a very very audible exhaust leak between the manifold and the engine block. I took it in to have that resurfaced.

Here is a timeline of events that just happened.

Take truck in to have exhaust manifold on passenger side resurfaced to fix exhaust leak.

They inform me I also have a radiator leak and want to know if I want them to take care of that. No I said, I'll deal.

They give me a call saying they broke a stud. They then said they warned me about this, not true.

They send it out to get it resurfaced for $40, and they were unable to resurface it completely, it needs to be replaced.

They also inform me it will be another $90 to drill out the stud, it's at an angle where they can't get a drill in because of the frame.

---------

I've been very stern and argumentative towards their actions. I wonder if I'm being a jerk at times and they're being honest, but I just don't know why they run into so many problems when I myself don't even run into so many problems fixing things.

Ok so an update. Turns out they are lying. They called me saying they will need to replace the exhaust manifold because the Machining shop said it was un-resurfaceable, I said NO just put it back on I saw how bad it was warped before, it wasn't even that bad.

So I called the resurfacing shop, I said "Hi, this is John from JK Automotive asking about one of our exhaust manifolds we sent to you". I asked them if they were unable to resurface it. The guy gave me a deep belly laugh and said of course not, we resurfaced it fine. I'm going over there to raise hell, is there anything I should say to be sure they know not to screw around with the charges?

Tell them straight out, I called asking about my manifold and they said it was resurfaced fine! Tell them to not mess around with people especially someone who knows what there doing!
