K&N filter: Is it worth it
 

Simple question:

Is the K&N drop in filter worth the money?

What are the actual advantages of it? I know it says mpg and hp increase but i would like to know the real world advantage and gains with it.

Save your money for a CAI. If you really want one, I'll sell you mine. Its just sitting in the garage, and I'm not planning on putting it into the new truck.

I have one, and if there are any HP gains or mpg gains they are extremely minimal. I like it because I don't have to replace the air filter all the time and if I go to get an oil change, they don't come out telling me i need a new air filter. They see the sticker and don't touch it. I think it pays for itself by not replacing the filter often. Mine has 42,000 miles on it.

Go to pdfilters.com and get a drop-in with the felt gasket Ford requires and they ship it free.

Even if it doesn't increase engine performance over the life of the truck you'll save a load of money on filters verses replaceing paper filters ever other oil change or so. I put 180,000 on my last K&N cai and would still clean up just like new. One of the first things to go into the new one. :thumbsup:

Drop-in filters do NOT add any power.

With my K&N drop in I got .6 to the gallon better.I ran my stock one way 4 hour drive,then the K&N on the way back.If you add more air you need to add more fuel.The stock air box flows anuff.You can get the drop in and a Airaid JR tube(more velocity) that would be a good combo.

The main reason I bought a K&N was to save money on throw away filters. I just clean and oil it once a year and it's good to go. The only other thing I've noticed is slightly better throttle response other then that there's no real benefit.:cool:

I have to agree with Tbird, it will save you money in the long run because you wont be buying filters ever again, just a recharge kit every so often. I would save up for a CAI, I personally have had the k&n and so no difference what so ever. Now With the S&B intake there is a difference :thumbsup:

When I bought mine I only noticed a very small amount of pep in her step, but the true benefit to buying the K&N drop-in is that it is the last air filter you will have to buy for that truck. Look at the cost for the next five years.. if you figure on changing it 2 times a year. the K&N is one payment of $35...the Fram filters are $12 each 12x2=24x5=$120....Motorcraft filters cost $30 each 30x2=60x5=$300
So $35 vs $120 or $300?
I would say it is worth it.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you all on this... I installed a K&N drop-in filter, and I've noticed at least 25+ extra HP, and upwards of 40 lbs/ft of torque. My MPG went up probably 3-5 mpg. I also noticed some additional benefits that I wasn't expecting: it fixed the mis-alignment of my frontend, quieted my squeeling brakes, made my sound system louder, and somehow managed to reduce the balance of one of my credit cards by $5000! So all in all, I say DEFINATELY get a K&N filter right away.

25+ HP sounds real good with only K&N filter

Clean em' out every 10k miles and they seem to last forever. Any performance benefit's seem to be minimal.:thumbsup:
