Exhaust and intake ok w/o programmer

Is it okay to run an exhaust (magnaflow si/so) setup and a cold air intake (outlaw) without a programmer. I want to do these but not do a programmer until I am out of warranty. Any input would be great.

I have a 5.4L if you were wondering.

You'll be perfectly fine. No vehicle will care that you have a cat-back exhaust on it. All the sensors are upstream so there is no way the vehicle knows that a new exhaust is installed. The computer only knows that more CFM's ar moving so it will adjust itself to suit.

As for the intake, I would like to think that all the aftermarket companies have their game down by now. I haven't heard about a CEL from an intake for a while now.

I've been running a AF1 & cat-back from last May till now without a tuner. If you want an AF1 I'm selling my shortly. Send me a message & I'll give you a fair price.

KC-10 FE out...

I keep reading all these posts about AF1 causing CELs. It makes me nervous. I may be buying AF1 from someone on this site. But I fear the CEL and the dealer saying it voids the warranty. Also i notice almost everyone w/ AF1 is using a tuner..... I am not ready for a tuner. I would love the power and the sound but hate the CEL. If I do get CELs how do you clear them?? Does the adaptive computer learn how to cope??
Again I have searched and searched and am still not fully sure. If the AF1 falls through, who runs what intake w/o a tuner and has no problems.

Sorry to be a pain in the a** but I am.

I have thought about this too. And Ford Truck Magazine did a article about upping the power on the 4.6l motor about 6 months ago. They even mentioned that after intake and exhaust the A/F mixture was too lean and they had to set up the programmer they added next to fatten the mixture along certian parts of the fuel curve. I have even read multiple post on here about F-150's leaving the lot lean from the factory

The 3.5" AF1 is the one thats not safe for some vehicle.......All trucks are diff. So you may run lean or may not. There are even some cases were trucks have ran rich I would get a tune if I added a CAI, from what i've read The 3.0" AF1 and Airaid CAI's are ok regarding to running lean. I havent heard much about the oulaw since its new,

I had the 3" AF1 on my 04 SCAB and it threw CELs. Since you have an 04, any replacement intake is likely to cause a CEL because the 04's had the lean limits set too tight in the PCM from the factory. In the 05+ F150's the lean limits were changed to correct this. This condition can also be corrected with custom tuning. You would probably be OK with a replacement tube that keeps the stock airbox.

I wouldnt be worried about the warranty too much; you have a 2004 right?

I have read a lot of good things about the K&N for the 5.4. I have read and researched a lot and havent found anyone, to my knowledge that hada CEL with the K&N.

Many, but not all 04's (5.4 3V) have a lean condition that may or may not cause a CEL. Some have run 17/1, and even as high as 19/1 lean. The issue was addressed by Ford with the later 04's and up. I did some extensive R&D on my truck with AF1 and another intake when Mike T was testing and I had some very serious issues before resolve was found. A custom tune will remove the risk of damage from a lean condition...I am positive that some will respond here and say its okay, but facts are facts, and its really up to you in the end....I would not do it...

I haven't seen anyone with an 04 report getting a CEL while using a replacement tube such as the Airaid MIT or the Airaid Junior.
