Question Weird noise from dash area!!!!

Guys I keep hearing a weird humming/light buzzing noise coming from the dash area. The thing is, I only hear the noise when the truck is in gear and I'm stopped. When the idle drops down to about 500 rpm the intermitent noise will start. If I put the truck in Neutral and the rpm's go up to about 600+, the noise stops. I cannot seem to figure out exactly what is causing this issue. Any help is greatly appreciated. Also, what is the normal idle rpm when the truck is warmed up??

I've been getting the same Noise for a while too. I have a 2004 SuperCrew
4x4. I have noticed that it happens after some rain or when its pretty cold outside. It sounds like it's comming near behind instrument cluster somewhere. Does the sound change when you turn your steering wheel? Mine does. I too would like to know what the hell that noise is, it's been bothering me for a long time as well.

I also have an odd noise coming from behind the instrument panel. Mine is related to wind turbulence above 50 mph. It sounds like the speedometer needle is scratching the gauge, but everything looks ok. It gets really loud when passing a semi, but I don't want a tech tearing my dash apart. I've taken my panel off to get a better view, but I can't be sure. My next step is the wiper cowl and weatherstripping.........
It's not a loud sound, but just enough to tick me off.

Mine comes form under the dash by the red light on top. Puching on dash does nto help. Sound occurs at idle and at speed. Seems to be worse in the cold. Annoying... I may take it in when I have a min....

I have the exact same noise, its been really cold around here lately and I think that might be why. Mine only does it while I'm in Drive while I'm completely stopped, usually goes away a couple of minutes after I start the truck. I did put it in drive and put on the e-brake and then I popped my hood to see if I could find the source of the noise. I can hear it faintly in the engine compartment on the driver's side, but its much louder when your sitting in the cab.
It started at the same time my engine started knocking lightly on take off only. Probably unrelated, I will try another gas station.

I've got the exact same thing going on.... mine only happens when it's cold outside and the truck is also cold....i'm thinking that it's some type of exhaust leak that's coming from under the hood..... I don't know though...

I had a similar noise I thought was coming from the dashboard area. It ended up being the intake tube coming lose from the fender well on the drivers side.

I still can't seem to identify what this noise is or where it is coming from. It does it regardless of steering wheel position, regardless of HVAC control positions, and seems to only happen when the RPM's drop down to 500. If I bump it into Neutral and the rpm come up to about 600 it stops making the noise. I really need some help here guys. Thanks!

Maybe i can shed some sort of light on this. i heard the rattling coming from my passenger side, when i got out, i walked over and pushed down on the black spacer between the hood and the windshield, what had happened is the button that holds them down had gotten loose, that took it away until it popped back up...taking it to the dealer tuesday, might not be your noise, but definately worth checking on.

I had the same thing happening, took it to the dealer two times with no luck. The tird time I took it there and told them the noise is driving me crazy and if they can't find it I'm going to file complaints with Ford. They found the issue. The air box was misalligned and a bit loose and only rattled at certain RMP's while in gear. It only happened to me while stopped at a light and first starting off from a stop. They tightened it down and sound is gone. Much better.

Airborne, I will give the air box a look over to check this out. I hoping to find the culprit soon, because this just drives me crazy to find the source of the noise.

Had the same noise, it only happened for a split second when taking your foot off the brake and slightly accelerating. It was the rubber grommet that surrounds the air intake tube going into the fenderwell. Mine was completely out of place.

Guys, I appreciate all of the suggestions for locating the source of the noise. However, I believe the noise is in the dash area because when I pop the hood, I can't seem to hear the noise. If I put my head near the dash, like under the steering column, I hear the noise. This only happens while the truck is at 500 rpm which means that it is in gear and stopped. I'm still searching and appreciate any help with this one. Thanks!
