Help with 4x4

I have an 2004 F150 lariat 4x4. Today, I needed to pull my tractor out of a ditch, so I used my front tow hooks, put it in 4L, then reverse and slowly pulled the machine up the hill in reverse. It worked perfectly.

The problem is that I now cannot get it out of 4L. I turned the switch to 2H, put it in reverse, and it is stuck in 4x4. I tried backing up 20 feet, nothing. I need to get it out of 4L.....any suggestions? Has this happened to anyone else?

Neutral with the brake on did the trick. Althought there is some lag time...you need to wait a bit for the light to go out and the tranny to disengage.

Thank you to all that offered advise !

How did you put it into 4 LOW? It's the same operation to turn it off.

I noticed if you have it in neutral, foot lightly on brake *and* you are rolling forward at 1 MPH or less, it goes in and out easier. Any more than 1 or 2 MPH and you'll get a clunk.
