I know...sucks

Here's the thing though. I spend most weekends in the desert or mountains riding dirtbikes. I drive the crap out of these trucks and so far they have held up pretty well. The only thing I have problems with are the brakes. I kill the fronts within 20,000 miles. Worst thing that happened was I cut a tire after hitting a curb. Other than that they keep going. Only thing left was a long term oil test....It passed

I go between 4-5k using motorcraft oil and filter. I think people would be surprised how long oil would really last with no significant performance loss. One recent analysis on Mobile 1 after 13k miles in a Tundra said the oil was still doing what is was designed to do.

What oil where you using? 14k miles is not the end of the world for alot of good synhetic motor oils. Not something I would do with out proper analysis being done but I wouldn't worry to much about it this 1 time.

I change mine every 7,000 or twice a year, and run Royal Purple syn. I don't care if it makes the internal parts of my engine purple, who see's it anyway....I run Mobile 1 full syn in my Grand National since thats all its ever had and change it every 7 or 8 months or 1000 miles....the car sits a lot.

The owners manual says 5K for normal and 3K for severe.

I split the difference and change it at 4K with the Motorcraft blend the manual calls for.

the pros and cons of changing at 3k you think you have "cleaner" oil in your truck more consitantly. when actually after about 500 miles you oil is almost as black as when you empty it at your interval.

I change my oil every 2500-3000 miles, I have never seen black oil.

At 90,000 miles. My ranger was hard pressed to have a slightly brownish tint to it when it was changed.

First time? Good luck... you'll need it.

5k

Just be prepared. If this is your first time after buying new, the oil filter has two really bad items going for it.

#1. It is put on there SO hard you'll near take your arm and hands off trying to wrestle it loose.
#2. Ford located the filter in an ALMOST-but-not-quite inaccesible location , where you will swear up-and-down while scraping & cutting your hands trying to get in there to dislodge the thing (NEVER tighten it up with anything other than your hands or you'll want to beat yourself instead of Ford next time you go to change it, trust me).

Good luck!

Oil Change

I change every 3,000 miles. Motorcraft oil and filter.

Remember, the 3,000 mile interval was also intended to promote preventive maintenance checks.

Every 5,000 miles with a synthetic, either Mobil 1 or Royal Purple.

Well my Ford Dealer said every 3K but my Lincoln dealer said every 5K. When I bought the truck, I knew I was going to keep it at least 10 years so I did the following. I KNOW OVER KILL, BUT IT GIVES ME PEACE OF MIND!

500 Changed
1000 Changed
1500 Changed
3000 Changed
5000 Changed
10, 15, 20, 25, 30, now on 32,234 so probably 35K

The strange thing is the Ford wanted to change every 3k and the lincoln every 5

Motorcraft Oil, and Filter BTW

The Ford manuel says every 5000, they want to sell vehicles, so they want it to last about 100,000. The dealers say every 3000, they want to sell oil changes and the additional services while you are there.
