I'm about to do a 400 mile non-stop trip .. ..
.. .. and I'm pretty sure I can do it on a full tank.
A friend told me to run mid grade or high grade fuel - if I could afford it - instead of the regular fuel, because, he claimed, it'll run a lot smoother, better milage, increase HP and do a world of good for efficiency as far as engine is concerned. I can afford it since fuel here has fallen more than $1.00 over the last few months. Should I listen or just stick to what's been working thus far? Waste of money, ro well worth the extra $$$ .. .. ? Appreciated in advance. |
. . mid grade maybe, unless your tuned for 93 octane I'd say its a waste.

I should add that the only engine/performance mods I have is a Volant CAI and Flowmaster catback.
No custome tune, no edge, no nothing. |
If your engine is tuned in stock form (which it is), then you will LOOSE power by running a higher octane. What ppl don't realize is that the LOWER the octane, the faster it burns, and vice-versa. 87 octane burns faster than 93 octane. The only reason to use a higher octane is if your timing and fuel curve is adjusted to take advantage of the slower-smoother burning fuel (hence the reason for a tuner). Run regular and hit the road......

What size tank do you have? I have the big one 35 gallons or whatever it is. I run nothing but 87 octane all the time and I can get over 400 miles on a tank no problem. I can usually run up to CT. and back on a tank and have to fill up as soon as I get into town. Thats about a 460 mile round trip

I also have extended tank option, though I'm not sure what size it is [35.8 gallons I think].
I know it's over 32 gallons because - though I've never run it dead empty - I've had to put more than 32 gallons one time when it was getting real close to the "E" I did 478 miles on a trip to Sth Carolina a few months back - knocking on "E" door - so I know I'll get the 442 miles MapQuest has calculated on this trip. |
Save your money. Stick with the 87 octane. Higher octane without the tunes is a wast of money.
I get over 400 miles per tank on my supercrew no problem. Have a safe trip. |
I got 472 on a 25 gallon tank. The trick was keeping the speed down. If I kept the speed around 65 to 67, mileage was great, but 75 and up made it horrible.

And running high octane fuel may cause starting problems, especially in colder weather due to reduced volitility.
I can get almost 370 miles to a tank, with the 27 gallon tank running well under the low fuel warning; if you've got the 35.8 gallon tank, it should be no problem for you. |

I've got the bigger tank option, 30 gallons, and I recently made the trip from north of Atlanta to Debary, FL, which is 30 miles west of Orlando. It was 485 miles from door to door and I made it on one tank averaging slightly over 18 miles a gallon cruising at 80-82 most of the way.

I never let my 05screw get lower then 1/4 tank and ive done 325-350 miles with 4 people and a fully loaded bed doing 75-85 mph w/ a 30 gallon tank.

Thanks for the reply all. Got back this evening.
I went with standard grade fuel and got 456 miles on the way there with the display reading 94 miles DTE at destination; and 468 on the way back with 81 DTE. I was impressed to say the least. I hovered around 72-78MPH with cruise for a good 90 percent of the journey both ways [I-95]. I did have it sitting on about 96MPH for a good 12 miles or so on the way back tailing a Subaru WRX. No shakes, no rattles and [thank God] no rolls. Ran like a dream in every way! |
