What's the Best Air Intake Kit

What is the best air intake kit for the 2004 5.4L engine? I would like something that won't let the engine run to lean, won't create a lot of noise, won't violate the warranty, looks factory, will provide more power, better gas mileage and sound a bit better.

Airaid, K/N, volant, aem, s/b, af1, jlt, all have the possibility of creating lean conditions. Best bet is combining an intake with a tuner.

Yes, I did a search, but I want to find a sepicific answer that I did not find. It seems that most of what I read did not answer those questions.

I personally have had airaid/jlt and the af1 on my truck. I like the af1 best followed by the jlt and then airaid. I cant speak for the rest of the intakes out there. BTW the jlt was the quietest of the three.

Well.......all will cause a 'lean' condition. So.....just get a airaid.

Based on your stated requirements, I would say try an Airaid Jr., or something similar. Get a kit which replaces the factory filter with a drop-in and a different intake tube but does not replace the stock airbox where the MAS (MAF?) sensor is located.

This one looks good and they seem to be taking the lean factor in.

If you go to that link they have a picture of the stock vs. the CAI, what a difference. I can't believe my 5.4 breathes through that little snorkel!

Many of these CAI's that I have been looking at show the air box without a lid, do they have a sealed box or is it open to the engine bay?

They seal when you close the hood.

I like the volant because of its enclosure. my engine bay gets pretty dirty at times so whenever I purchase an intake it will be a volant.

MeanGene Sep 4, 2006 12:42 PM

I like the Volant because of the sealed air box and true Cold Air Intake as the air is not coming from the engine compartment as it appears to be with the airaid and af1 that merely use a heat shield.

You posted while I was still writing. Have you installed the Volant yet? And if so, how do you like the Volant?

Here is a link on installing the Volant.

I have the Airaid Jr. on my truck, and like it. I just couldn't justify spending the extra $170 for the full system. The reason that I say that is I e-mailed airaid before I bought any system and they said that the full kit would produce around 18hp and the Jr. would make around 12 hp. So $170 for 6hp, I just couldn't do it. Do a search for my screen name, another member had posted pictures of the Jr. intake tube sitting next to the factory set-up and there was a big differance, IMO.
