Trading in because of gas prices?

I have seen more than a few people here getting fed up with the cost of driving around a truck that averages 14-18 mpg. How many others thought about this back when you bought? Are there more out there that cannot see the difference between 2.75 and 3.00 for gas? If some people cannot afford to drive the truck anymore because of this jump in price, are there other reasons? For example: @2.50/gal a while back, 25 gallons would cost $62.50; @2.75/gal = $68.75; @3.00/gal = $75.00; and just for fun @3.25/gal = $81.25. Now, the biggest difference is $18.75, but that is just one evening out with the family at a restaurant. I just don't see how 19 bucks more per week is going to break a person unless there are special circumstances. Another thing to consider is how much worse a person would be financially if they traded in for something efficient. Just wondering.

I've got to ask... Where can you go out to eat for a family on $18.75? What do you consider a family, 1 person?

Excellent points...I think the "trading it because of the price of gas" thing is psychological. People think they are spending a lot more than they were when really its not THAT much more. Most people that trade because the can't afford to drive the trucks anymore are IMO either looking for a reason to trade or they just haven't thought it through at all. Most people that trade in a 1 or 2 year old truck will never make up the depreciation hit they took in fuel savings.

I would trade for a cheaper truck (2002 or 03) model just to stay in a truck. I would have a hard time giving up driving a truck. Cheaper payments give more buffer coin for other areas I don't see any reason for me to have something brand new every time I change vehicles.

I guess I'll be one of them....so I think I am. Eversince I saw new Vette, it has ponder my thoughts about trading-in. But that thougt's been very difficult one ...cause I have so many mods and dang I just love drving this thang but so is Vette. My boss (wife) wont let me have both since we just got new Honda Pilot for her. So far, I've tried to distance myself from love of my rig with notion on gas price and gpm.

I had an English teacher in high school that would poke fun at my buddy's '84 F-250 flatbed diesel beast of a truck. "How many gallons per mile that truck get?"

That sounds like the guy in charge of the Grounds department where I work. My boss asked him what kind of mileage he got in his F-250. He replied "I don't get mileage!"

I have thought about trading my truck in, but only to get a bigger one. Like an F350 SC long box or CC long box, 4X4, PSD/6spd. But I wouldn't be doing it because of gas prices. I think that the gas price thing is just an excuse for people to get rid of the trucks that most of them did need in the first place, and only got them because they are/were "the in thing" to have.

My 06 Screw is getting 12.3 mpg average over 1st 1500 miles

I go easy on it too. I thought I would at least average 15 mpg. This is a 50 50 mix of city/hwy.

Some of the younger guys I work with have been forced to give up their F-150's for small compact cars. I completely understand as they don't make anywhere near as much money as an old cuss like me, and many of them drive more than 60 miles one way to work. Some of these guys live on shoe string budgets, and an extra $50 a month in gas hurts. Not to mention, payments on a $10K compact are easier to handle than their $30-40K trucks.

As for me, the 15 MPG (city) I get from my SCrew is plenty good enough for me no matter how expensive gas gets. But, I sure do miss 1998 when I could fill up my F-150 SCab for $20 (25 gallons @ 79 cents).

I think you really have to look at it over the long term....
Take these assumptions
F150 15mpg
Honda 30mpg
Gas= $3 per gallon

Both Vehicles Driven 100k miles

F150 Cost=20k in fuel
Honda Cost= 10k in fuel

Honda is 10k cheaper to own over this time/mileage period.
I still prefer my truck.

Interesting thought though, for every 1mpg over 15 you could get, you would save $1250 over 100k miles.
