Highway and gears???

k so the situation: 4.56 gears front and rear
5.4L V8
8 inch lift with 38 tires
85-90% highway driving
driving around 72-80 MPH 90% of the time (thats how people drive here in GA )

so....hows my mpg going to look.....i will have a edge tuner on it. should i go to just 4.11 gears? or what?

60 bucks to fill up my tank here

you would want to keep it around stock gearing.

with 38's you would want to go with 4.88's

Find out how much your tires weigh and that will better help answer your question. I am going by tire weight and revs per mile. Your gear ratio is going to be very low with 38's and 4.10's (might as well stick with 3.73's, not going to be a costworthy difference on a 4wd). If your tire/wheel combo is lighter than mine (willing to bet they are by a long shot) then if you use cruise at low speeds 60mph you'll see great mileage. Definitely hard to say even if I knew your tire weight because I can't say with the mods you have.

My recommendation: Wait until you drive with 38"/3.73's (the added truck height might overshadow the tire weight arguement I had) because height is a variable that really messed with my mileage, much more-so than tire weight. Definitely do not throw 4.56's in there if you do 90% highway driving before trying 3.73's.

thanks josiah alwasy a help. well....the tires shipped had a total weight of 392....so that makes it 98 pounds a tire....around 20 pounds per wheel. so thats say 120 without air. how much you think with air would weigh??

I don't believe the air would add much weight at all. That is incredibly light for a 38" tire and 18" wheel combo, definitely a night and day difference from an MT. You won't be putting as much strain on your drivetrain as I will be so have no doubt about that, I think you'll be happy with your 3.73's unless a grand and a half comes pretty easy to you. I chose to live with the lack of low end for increased highway mileage, when will everything be done?
