gears or tuner?

Hey guys, I have a 4.6L 2004 F-150 with a 6" fabtech lift and 35" BFG AT KOs and I was trying to figure out my next move. I am going to go for power this time. Would I get a bigger power boost from the Edge tuner or from regearing to 4.10 gears to get my gears back closer to 3.73 (3.73 was factory, before I changed tires)? Any advice would we appreciated.

Gears would most likely give you more grunt with that rolling stock and be the better bet of the two for acceleration. The Edge would help correct your tire size (and gear ratio if you do that now) and such for your speedo/odo afterwards.

There is a bit of a price difference as well. Is your truck a 4x4? Not sure of the improvements of the gears but I have a 6" lift with 35s and the edge and It feels 100x better. There is a huge gain in performance. So either way Ithink the edge would be more helpful all around.

Wouldn't both be the best option?

Both would be the best option. I was going under the assumption his budget only allowed for an either or scenarion. Although Kick *** FX4 is right, gears should run 2x-4x as much as the Edge Evo would.

I can get gears for like $500 or so... its a 2wd... I can get the edge for like $330. I cant afford both right now. I do realize both is the best option though. I was just wondering which would help more. After reading this, I am gonna go with the edge. Thanks a lot guys.

Gear 100% but not 4.10s. Start at 4.56s or 4.88. You will see almost no difference with 4.10s.

Well I vote for the gears.

I am not a 4x4 guy but I am a drag racer so I will give you a bit of an explination and you can make your discision on your own.

Gears: Your gears will give you the MOST feel of improved power without acctually giving you more power. Right now with the bigger tires you are putting a bigger load on your motor which could affect its longevity in the end. I am not sure what your stock tire size or gear ratio is but for an example lets say you have 3.73's now. Just guessing but lets say your stock tire was 32" and now you are running a 35", that is a 10% increase in tire size. This 10% increase will effectivly drop your rear gearing from 3.73's to 3.40's. Compound that to the added weight of the tires and the 3.73's drop to almost 3.27's. Switch your rear gears to 4.30's or 4.56's and see how big of a difference you will get in acceleration.

Programers/tuners: Here are a few things to think about when considering a tuner. First if you order the tuner with a tune already in it, it is a generic tune. In other words it might work great in the truck it was made for but due to production variences it could give your truck power and also make it lean out or a number of other things that could destroy a motor without you ever knowing it. I am sure most of the reputable tuners i.e. SCT, Diablo, Troyer etc. have all taken this into account so their generic tunes are only a step above what Ford put into it from the factory. You might see 15rwhp and maybe 20lbft out of it. When it comes to tunning a car/truck the only way to go that will net you the most power that is available and be safe on the motor is to have it tuned on a Dyno where the a/f, timming, etc. can be monitored. Most bolt on cars/trucks will only pick up maybe 20-25hp with a custom dyno tune, you won't get that much out of a mail order generic tune.

With 295s you should leave it alone. Thats not much difference.

Do the gears man I say go for the 4.56's, if you plan on keeping the 35's. Im going to run 4.88's, because I plan on running 37's or 38's...
