Still learning about '04 and up F150's can someone answer some ???'s for me?

And these question are more for an '06 in a specific situation (than '04 or '05).

Is it true that even if the late model trucks are not currently equipped with certain options that the truck is still already prewired, and the existing computer is ready to set up for any or all of the following?

Criuse? (with change of steering wheel)

Keyless entry? (add required parts)

Power windows and locks? (if you add the necessary switches and motors)

Rear sliding window? (is any wiring already there if you install the parts?)

Moonroof? (is any wiring already there if you install the parts?)

I know this sounds wierd, but IF a truck had the 4:10 rear end w/7 lug hubs
and someone wanted to change to either 3:55 or 3:73 limited slip, do you have to change out the entire rear end, or can you just swap gears and axles/hubs and keep the existing housing?

Afer making these changes how difficult is it to recalibrate the speedo, or is that taken care of say with a programmer from Troyer.

My reason for asking is I found a '06 XL 5.4 Supercab (LOVE the long bed, do NOT like the 4:10) that was stolen and partially stripped. Any or all of the above changes could be easily made at this point where I would have an '06 with low miles (title has NOT been totaled) and warranty, for a price I couldn't turn down even after doing all the work mentioned above. As part of the deal I could get most if not all parts at a discount - SWEET!

What is there is fine, even the color is perfect for me, and adding some or all listed above could make this a really unique truck when I got done with it (XL 5.4, hi torque, tow, 3:73 lim slip, Lariat wheels, cruise, keyless entry, power windows and locks, slider and moonroof).

I may not go through with it, but I sure am tempted if the above questions were answered correctly. Right now I have "first dibs" with a few days to decide. If I don't buy it several others already want it.

Maybe I am wierd, but I seldom ever do what others think is conventional, but it has done me well so far, so I am not about to change this late in life...

Others look at what appears to them to be a problem and see the problem where I can often look at the same thing and see the potential.

I cant answer any of the questions but did you say your getting a stolen truck that has been stripped with a 4:10 rear end? Did it come stock with the 4:10?

Yeah, an '06 XL, 5.4 with a long bed. Stolen, stripped and recovered (but the title has not been totalled as of yet, we can get around that), but without any major non-fixable damage. The information I have is that it is a 4:10 and it does have the 7 lug axles. Also from the info I have the long bed XL REQUIRES a 4:10.

bump, I would like to know on the keyless entry part too

Mister B May 25, 2006 12:48 PM

I have an 04 XL and none of the wiring is there for keyless entry, power windows, power locks, rear sliding window or the moonroof.

Cruise would be the easiest mod. Once you change the steering wheel, all you need to do is go to the dealer and have them activate the cruise.

I added power windows, locks and keyless entry to my XL. You can see what i went with in the thread below.

As for changing to 3.55 or 3.73 gears in the rear end, you would only need to change the gears (not sure about limited slip though), and the dealer can reset your speedometer after changing gears.

You would not be able to use lariat wheels with the 7 lug hubs though. Lariats are 6 lug.

Leave the 4.10s, theres not much of a difference between the 4.10s and 3.73s. Swap out the axles to 6 lug. The keyless can be add and so can the window and locks. Cruize can be added also. I dont know about the sunroof and rear slider. If you really need to swap gears the dealer or a programer can take care of that for you.

This truck has the heavy duty package. The rear end is not the same size as the other rear ends used in these trucks. The rims are the same as the seven lug Superduty wheels from a few years ago.

The wheels are expensive.
Swapping the axles is a major job.
The 4.10 gears do give you nice power.

The wiring for cruise is in there, but as has been stated you need to have the dealer turn it on after you put in the switches.

There is no factory lock/window/seat/mirrors wiring.
I have added all those things to my truck, pretty easy to do.
It is way to expensive to hire these things done.

You can put power mirrors in for just over a 100, using e-bay.
You can put power windows in for 50-150 bucks using e-bay.
You can put remote keyless in for 40-80 bucks.
Alarm can be substituted for keyless for 50-125 bucks.
Cruise can be put in for 50-140 depending on what you pay for the switches and for the dealer to turn it on.
Power seats you need to either swap the seats or do like I did and put pedestals from power seats in place of your manual seat pedestals.

Look inside the door jambs to see how much work putting wiring into the doors will be. On some models the rubber boot that the wires travel in fastens to a white block on the body side. Other trucks the boot just pops loose leaving a hole into the body there. The trucks with the white block are roughly five times as much work to do these in the door wiring mods.

My other truck was an '05 XLT and it did not have keyless entry, but upon installing my LT handles I noticed it did have the harness for the keyless entry already instlalled. As far as the other things, I have no idea. Good luck

This keeps coming up, so to cover it more completely;

There are three overall wiring harnesses for these trucks. There may be minor variations in any truck, but overall they are the XL / STX basic harness, which has cruise wiring, but nothing in the doors except speaker wires.

The XLT/FX4 harness. This harness has power windows, power mirrors, power door locks. It should also have the harness for the keypad. Everything but the keypad should come stock so it is no surprise that the harnesses are there...

The keypad is a cheap option on these trucks so they seem to include the harness rather than making a new one just for that.

The Lariat/KR harness. This has climate control and information panel wiring. Also memory seat additions, power mirror options like turn and heated, power pedals plus of course the Audiophile with subwoofer harness.

Some of these options can be ordered to the FX4 or XLT by adding a partial harness.

Basically if you buy a non-power optioned XL or STX it's fairly major for the dealer to put in these options. They do often put in aftermarket keyless/locks/alarms door locks, and the customer often thinks these are factory. But they are usually put in by a local stereo custom shop.

Ford's plan is to up sell the customer that wants these features to the XLT.

Since the XLT will often have other options that increase the cost this is seldom a 'bargain'.
This is called plus selling.

Bring the buyer in for a cheap truck, and then ease him up to something far more expensive.
That is how dealerships make their money.

As an alternative, Ford would also like it if you order from the factory.
Simply put, they want you to come in for the sale, but then buy at retail.

Can I pickup just the door harness or does the entire harness need replace? I am putting OEM pwr stuff in my STX. I have OEM regs with pwr, XLT door pannels and I do have cut pigs for the switches. Just wondering if there was a plug and pay setup.

ChrisAdams Aug 27, 2006 12:42 PM

You can buy the door harness. Not cheap, but you can get it. As to it hooking up to the chassis harness, I could not tell you.

On a 2004-2005 STX nothing there for it to hook up to. Some 2006 STX trucks came with power windows etc. so those trucks have the XLT harness. Possibly they put that harness in all the STX trucks but Ford won't say.
Have you pulled the door panel and looked inside? Have you looked at the rubber boot going through the door?
Have you found a body control module? That is what they use on the XLT up trucks. There is no body control module on the 'lesser' trucks.

I suspect you will have to fabricate a harness, even if you buy door harnesses you will have to link that into the factory wiring.

i bought a harness from an xlt to switch to pw and pl. it runs 1 piece from inside the drivers door down the sill behind the front seats and up the pass side sill to the fuse panel. the pass door harness has a connection point. i'm lucky it doesn't go behind the dash....that would be a much bigger job.

Chris I will let you know when the rest of my peices arrive. May even take a picture:) I am trying to finish some other projects. Have had my Cobra on the rack for a month putting in a tubular K-member(I have not had time to stick with it.) So I don't want to pull the truck apart till I get some other stuff done.

Have you added electric fans? I know u are a cheap bastard! So I wonder what you did to save money on the controller if you did? Your a regular maguyver:)

So you did get a harness from the junk yard? Did you also get both door harnesses? The door harness for each side is $50! New! Not sure about the one you have. Also how did you get them through the boot?

Riken Aug 31, 2006 02:56 PM

yup, junk yard. like i said...the drivers door is all 1 piece into the cab harness. someone already bought the passenger door which unplugs. well mine is anyway. and the boot is still on the harness that i have. i'm kinda sure the pass boot went with the door.
