Starting to hate my truck.

I have an 05 with just over 13,000 miles. I had itin a month ago to get the rail dust off. It's back and after they did the specail wash, the paint is coming of the F150 emblems. The motor has a knock. The only way I would know how to describe it is that it might sound like a lifter? I am nowhere close to being a mechanic. The truck leaks a little bit of oil. It is all over the driveway, but the dealer cant find the leak. And the front tires are rounded out on the outer edges.
I don't know if I should start looking into a new truck? This is the first vehicle I purchased new. I had less problems with the vehicles that I got used. Maybe I should get a Dodge? lol.

What is rail dust?

There is no paint on the F-150 emblems.

There is a TSB for an engine valvetrain sound that sounds like a collapsed lifter. Have your dealer check it out.

Leaking oil that the dealer can't find? Tell them to look harder!

Tires? Have the dealer check the alignment, rebalance the tires, and rotate them.

It sounds to me like the service center at the dealership you're going to sucks big time. I'd try another one.

Rail dust looks like tiny dots of rust. And they say it does come from trains and it is on all cars but shows up more on white. As for the emblems, I am guessing it is paint? The black part where it says F150. I go in tonight for an oil change, maybe they will find the leak? And as far as the tires go. I had it in for an alignment when the tires started to show wear on the edges.

Ditch that dealer! I have to beleive if the wash, polish, and wax that truck the spots won't come back for a long time.

To remove rail dust, clay it. Washing and waxing does not help. Claying gets it right off. Make the dealer pay.

Tires should be under warranty. Get them replaced if they are feathering.
If you don't hit a lot of curbs, make them align the front end and tell you why they are wearing. Exception, if you have never rotated the tires, it is normal to feather a little if you drive on bad roads. Tires should be rotated every 5-8k miles depending on road conditions. These trucks are heavy, treat the tires right and they should last. Or be replaced under warranty.

If you have the 5.4 lots of them have cam phasor problems. Warranty it.

Can't find the oil leak? Someone is yanking someone. Engines are not that complicated. They have a lift, throw it up in the air and take a look.
Rear oil seal leaks are common on new engines nowadays, mostly because the new oils are synthetic blend, very thin and like to escape where they can. It should stop quickly, or the seal that is leaking should be replaced. Under warranty.

Second everyone who says you need a better dealer. You can have warranty work done at the dealer of your choice, so look around.
There are several dealerships near me. I wouldn't let them change a tire. I drive an hour to a good one.

I don't use synthetic for that very reason. Leaks are no fun.

What is rail dust?

I dunno about the rear main seal leak being common. These modular motors seal up pretty well nowadays whether you're using synthetic oil, conventional oil, or cooking oil. But there ain't nothing to finding an oil leak, worst case all it takes is a little time, some dye and a blacklight.

Just got back from the dealer for an oil change. It wasn't an oil leak. He said it could have looked like an oil leak with what I was seeing on my driveway. It is the rack and pinion (spelling?) that is leaking. Will this still be covered under my warranty with having a leveling kit? I had it instaleld where they told me to go. As for the emblems. I have a set of HD emblems waiting to go on once it gets warm. I am not sure exactly what rail dust is?

Unless they can prove that the leveling kit caused the rack and pinion leak it will be covered under warranty. Hopefully after they fix it you won't have any more problems.

Hi Quintin, there have been a number of threads on this, here and in another forum.

I've seen seal leaks on other member’s trucks, and my truck leaked from new to about 700 miles, then it stopped on its own and never leaked another drop.
Some have posted about rear seal replacements under warranty.
Others, like mine needed no intervention.

Anyone that has put synthetic in an older engine has a lot of respect for its ability to find any way out...

Rail Dust

Read this:
http://www.clean-image.co.uk/articles/fallout.htm

Brake Dust - Similar to rail dust, brake dust is also in the form of tiny, sharp metal shavings. In recent years, asbestos brake pads were replaced with metallic brake pads, which are actually brake pads made from tiny metal or metallic shavings. Anytime a vehicle is braking; brake dust is disbursed into the air and onto the paint finish. Since the brake dust is now actually tiny particles of bare metal, this form of brake dust can seriously damage the paint finish when left untreated.....I bet that most of the orange spots are right behind the wheels and low on the panels (majority).

Use a clay bar

google rail dust............
