Just installed K&N 77 Series Intake System

I did quite a bit of searching before I purchased the intake kit. Locally I had the choice of Air Raid or K&N -- both of which were within $20 of each other. I didn't want this for an increase in performance... I have a Mustang running 18 pounds of boost for that. I wanted it to, hopefully, save a little fuel. Right now I'm getting 14 to 17. My father's '04 4.6L only gets 1 mpg more.

The install was pretty straight forward. The instructions had a few unnecessary steps in them, but otherwise were very detailed. The kit came with ALL parts needed, even thread locker. My only complaint about the kit is it didn't come with the recharge kit. When I worked for Advance Auto a couple of years ago I know the FIPK's did...

My inital opinion isn't good or bad. I don't think the truck feels any different, but it does SOUND different. At cruise the truck sounds exactly as it did before. Once you go WOT you hear the motor growling thru the intake. With the windows up and the radio at a reasonable level you barely hear it. With the radio off & windows down it sounds like a beast. In a week my gf and I are taking a road trip up to Virginia Beach (from Daytona Beach). I guess the true test -- if my $320 went to waste -- will be how the truck reacts to the 1,462 mile journey.

Guess I'm not asking any questions here, but posting my opinions in case someone else is looking to do the same!

i was just looking at these on ebay. im debating either the k&n 77 or the volant because I like how the volant is neatly placed. Do you like the sound it makes?? I dont want any weird a$$ noises when I step on the gas.

I was cracking up reading that.

I have the K&N FIPK. I don't know if I really like the noise or not. At certain times, it gives off a loud, kinda vibration noise (usually going up a long grade, and the tranny kicks down) My wife HATES that noise. Don't expect any NOTICABLE performance gains either.

If Volant is the one that is enclosed I would probably go with that. Because it may be a little quieter and look a little better IMO

In all, it's not a bad mod, just not really worth the coin IMO.

I love my K&N 77 Series. I've noticed gas milage improvements. I love the sound at WOT with my Flowmaster SIDO. I've turned alot of heads with that sound. Hell, even when it cranks up and idles it sounds good. It has a nice deep tone.

Good choice going with the K&N

The 77 Series is going to sound different/louder than the FIPK cuz its not plastic like the FIPK. K&N's websight advertises lower horse power gains for the 77 Series though.

As for the sound I can only explain it one way: it's almost like changing out a standard clutch fan for a flex fan -- just not nearly as loud. At idle you don't hear it at all. On light accel you barely hear any difference, but at WOT it makes a small roar. I live 7' above sea level... so I don't hit steep grades often

When I first bought the 77 series (yesterday morning) I didn't know it was difference than the FIPK. When I looked thru my new Summit today I saw they advertised both. Besides a chrome tube I don't see the difference! I know metal holds heat better than plastic, but while you're moving the air rushing past it should keep the tube cool.

Next I want to replace my stock 17" '05 FX-4 rims... and outfit the new wheels with a set of Terra Grapplers. Those things look mean, and should do well in the sugar sand down here.

I know that K&N has been around in awhile, and I have my air intake choices between it and the airaid. Basically going to get it for better exhaust notes. I know alot of people say it's not worth the money. Any advice, I just don't know what to do. I'm not going to "chip" m truck in the future or anything. Should I just save my money?

Is it really a worth while mod to save fuel? I mean how long will it take to save enough in gas to pay for it? I didn't get nor have I seen anybody else claim to get a lot better fuel economy over stock...certainly not enough to justify the cost of the system.

Like I told my dad when he was looking into getting an Airaide like mine....certainly looks good, sounds good (IMO), and adds a little power, but I would be hard pressed to say the increase in MPG is worth it.

Verado300, I'd love to see how those things look on your truck sometime soon. When making sharp turns do they rub?? I'm torn between the 265/70's & 295/70's! I noticed that Discount Tire Co. has the 295's in stock, but I'd have to to with Discount Tire Direct for the 265's.

RamSS/T, I completely understand there isn't a mod out there that's going to make a major improvement in fuel economy. However, not only am I the type that keeps cars/trucks for a long time, but I drive a LOT. If it were to only save me .25 mpg on the highway, it WOULD pay for itself over time.

It's good to see some Central Florida guys in here! I actually live in Port Orange near the Dunlawton bridge. I usually say Daytona because almost everyone knows where that is! I'm in & around the Deland area on a regular basis. Gotta run!
