5.4 3v vs 5.4 2v

I've got a pretty bone stock F150 and all my other friends in town have the 5.4 2v Superdutys. I won't race my truck head's up because I'm too young to be getting outrageous speeding tickets. Anyways they say that their Superduty's would just kill my truck. So for all the 04,05,06 F150 owners, who would win the race?

260 hp 2 v 5.4 vers 300 hp 3v 5.4....only variable is rear end ratio. The f-150 is packing over 700 lbs over the last generation F-150....

300hp is deceiving because we dont actually see that HP due to engine management. Let me say that I drive 5.4 2Vs everyday and the throttle response and low end power kill the 5.4 3V in my Scab F150/3.73's. The 5.4 3V comes alive at a much much higher RPM than the older 5.4 2V, unfortunately, these trucks dont see those types of RPM's on a normal basis. In a truck, you need the power down low, and these engine really are designed for upper rpm power, so we really dont feel it. In short, a superduty would more than likely take you off the line, but that really depends on the weight of your F150 vs the weight of the superduty. If the new F150s are so much more heavier, than an adequate power plant should be utilized.

OK wait a second. A Super Duty of any kind weighs more than an F150. That and the 40HP deficit spell defeat for him, unless he has 4.10 or 4.30 gears, which are an option in the Super Duty. If you both have 3.73s you'll smoke him.

Did you not read the above post. 40HP sounds nice on paper, but the RPM's that the 40HP comes in defeats the purpose. We are racing on paper here, you are forgetting the variables concerning the engine management on the new F150 which prevents "300hp" from even coming into discussion. Stock for stock, the 5.4 2V superduty worktruck I drive will own my 05 5.4 3V, I have no reason to be biased.

Hmm I don't know about that. Consider the parasitic loss in the drivetrain. the "300 HP" 5.4L puts down 240 HP real world in a 4x2 truck on a dyno. So the same percentage of loss in the F250 4x2 would yield 208 HP. There of course would be more loss if the trucks are 4x4. I am not questioning your honesty but it is extremely hard for me to believe that a truck with 208 HP on the ground and weighs more can beat a truck with 240 HP on the ground that weighs less. If the F150 was a Screw with 3.55 gears and the F250 had 4.10s then it would be understandable. However, if they are similarly configured the F150 is going to win. I'd love to see them both run in a race though. Maybe you could get a coworker to race you in your truck, for research's sake? :D

I don't know about all that . . .

I've raced my dads F-250 SCREW SB 5.4, killed him, both had 33s at the time even though mine were about 1.5" wider. ;)

The tremendous weight disadvantage of the SD will be a lot to overcome. Same cab size, gearing, driver skill, etc. and the F-150 will smoke the SD.

Before I sold my 2000 F150 with 5.4 2v (basically same truck as my 04, supercab, 4*4 etc-see sig), I thought I'd race my new 04 cause the butt dyno was telling me my 2000 would destroy the 2004. After the race I had a new appreciation for the 04 cause it destroyed the 2000. The 04 feels slower for some reason, but is actually faster. Weird, but true, maybe its the quietness or the smoothness, I dunno.

As for the superduty, you will kill it. I raced a F350 PSD from light to light up to about 60mph, I lost, but only by half a truck length. A 2V F250 wouldn't stand a chance. Go shut em up.

COFX4 12-09-2005 10:15 AM

It wouldnt even be close....My work truck is a 2003 Super Duty Supercab with the old 5.4...It's a total pig....My truck would walk all over it, especially with my mods.....I'm sure back when it was stock I would still beat (not kill) an old 5.4.......

blkscrew5.4 12-09-2005 10:36 AM

My F-150 won in my case. I raced an F-250 with the 5.4 (super cab) no idea of gearing or anything, and pretty sure it was stock, I got up to about 90 or so and almost had to wait for the guy at the next light ( a good bit of distance between us anyway). My 4x2 screw has the 3.55 LS and slightly larger tires (265/70/R17 dueler AT Revo's). The F-250 was also 4x2. So I think we've got the edge on them at least.

I think the new trucks are so quiet and smooth that people get the impression that they are slow. I drive around in mine and think that I am going slow and when I look at the speedometer it tells a different story.

My friend has a '03 5.4 2v, and my '04 5.4 v3 Beat him in a quarter mile(I think it was a quarter mile ;)). The only time his '03 was in front of me was at the start for about 5 seconds. After that, my truck walked away from him.

KenFX4 12-09-2005 02:27 PM

I raced my buddies 03 with the same gears I've got from about 15mph to about 80 and I walked off and left him from the get go, we did another race from about 40mph to 80 and I pulled him by about 1 truck length. Both of are trucks were stock supercrew fx4 except his had an magnoflow exhaust and my was factory.

silverbullet5.4 12-09-2005 04:47 PM

Maybe the initial jump on the older 5.4 2V makes it seem faster, either way Im not racing the work truck, the trans just took a dump with only 100k miles. The company will be distributing new trucks soon so Im curious as to what I will get. That'd be cool to get a new F150, but seriously doubt I will.
