That's what I have been running since day 1. I use the fairly new Mobil 1 5w-20 made for Fords and other stuff that requires that viscosity. I am at 20K now and haven't had the first problem. I usually change it every 5K just because I like to, but I know you can go longer on syn. I usually have to add a quart between changes, but that is typically normal from a synthetic oil due to the way it works. The Benz's at work use a little between changes and they all run Mobil 1.

I have an 04 f-150 5.4 3v and am running motorcraft synthetic blend 5W30 and mine will not use a drop in 5K which is when I change and my engine runs quiet and smooth.

Some folks think too hard about oil. You probably aren't gonna see a big enough practical difference to warrant running some high dollar full synthetic oil, but it's your barbeque.

Run something with the latest API rating. Use a good filter (FL820S, IMO). Change it regularly. Sleep well at night.

Amsoil user here too. Just ordered the first batch for my truck. SoundPer4mance have you been told to use the 5w30 instead of the 20? I get my oil through a friend who knows the regional rep, the rep says when he looked it up they reccommend 5w30. Didn't get the full story yet, but something about top end/bottom end. Picking it up tomorrow and I'll get the whole story.

It's my understanding that a full synthetic will allow for almost no engine wear. Is that accurate? If so, isn't it a good idea to wait a bit for your engine to break in before switching to synthetic?

scorpio, i am a dealer, so for any truck that wants 5w20 ill reccommend 5w30 or 0w30. Amsoil does have the XL Series oil in a 5w20, but IMO its overpriced for what it is. I wouldnt be suprised though if in the near future they came out with a GOOD synthetic 5w20. The demand is just too high for them not to.

I'm with Quintin on this; use a good quality oil and filter and don't worry about it. Everyone has their own opinions; form your own and use them.

Change the oil every 3k or 3 months whichever comes first. Use the recommended viscosity and a quality oil filter (FL-820S) and you’re all set

Everyone has their own oil oppinions...I would like to see two Ford 5.4L modular engines side by side after 100K miles, one with fully synthetic, one with the synthetic blend Motorcraft stuff.....tear them down and look at wear....

If there was no difference, I would be convinced there was no advantage to fully-synthetic oil beyond being able to run it longer in the engine...

Until then, my piece of mind comes from Mobil 1 5w-20 fully synthetic.......

I run syn in mine only because it is really hot where I live. City driving in a place like Phoenix at 110' makes for some unreal underhood temps. I usually see a 30-40' difference in the outside temp and the intake air temp in the summer. With all that said, check out this link, You'll find it sums up what Quintin says.

What do you use to cook with?
Lard?
Canola oil?
Think of it this way. I will be putting in the best oil I can afford, may be overkill, but I believe it will be worth it in 100k miles.
