P.O.S. Gas Lid Hinge

Has any one found an aftermarket replacement for the P.O.S. plastic hinge on our Gas lids? I purchased a Billet Gas Lid and it seems to be to heavy for the plastic hinge. Why would they make something that gets used so often out of plastic? Guess its a good thing our doors aren't hung on plastic hinges.

check moss motors under supporting vendors i think they have them
not sure about the plastic hindge though

It's not metal so it cannot create a static discharge and blow stuff up when refueling. Plastic is your friend, it was designed to hold the plastic lid, not a big hunk of add-on metal. Just because you 'use it often' doesn't make plastic a poor material choice.

..and people were complaining about our trucks being heavy... :smoke:

I've got a billet gas door. It does not sag very much. It is not noticable unless you're within a few feet of it and then most people can't tell.

My fuel door hinge broke on my 04 it's wouldn't stay closed or open. Took it to the dealear and they replaced the hinge. That was a couple bucks and 89 dollars of labor fee, good thing it was covered by the waranty. :D

89 dollars for labor?!?! i would go there after your warrenty is up lol

I've broken mine twice. If you look at it hard enough or use harsh language anywhere in the fuel filler door's proximity, it'll break. Sucks.

Easily the most disappointing design element of the new body style! I'm sorry, but a flimsy plastic fuel door does not scream out, "Built Ford tough!"

How such a substandard design ever made it onto the production truck I'll never know -- but my guess is that the path would eventually lead to an accountant!

That cheap plastic door burns me every time I look at it!

The fuel door hinge broke first day I had my truck. How the salesperson didn't notice this when he filled up my first tank of gas, I'll never know. I suspect he did know but didn't bother to disclose. Anyway, trip back to the stealership and replaced under warranty. Another hour of my life I'll never get back. :)

Maybe Ford will initiate a buy back program if enough people complain about the plastic fuel door

dzervit 06-17-2005 09:22 AM

Wow... you guys breaking the doors need to lay off the steriods. Seriously. Over 600,000 of these trucks on the road and 6 guys crying about it. It's your problem, not the fuel doors. I don't blame the bed frame company when my 300lbs ass jumps on the bed like a little kid and snaps it in two. "I mean, what where they thinking, putting WOOD under there?! It should clearly be reinforced steel. Who in their right mind would use wood?! It doesn't scream 'Sealy tough'."

I am going to agree with the cheap Gas Lid here. I park my F150 right next to the Mustang and they have the fillers on opposite sides (still confuses me at the pump) so that standing between the cars both lids are visible for comparison. The Mustang lid is perfectly centered with an even gap and looks like the rest of the car, it is metal. The F150 lid droops, has an uneven gap, and looks faded compared to the rest of the car, it is plastic.

Go take it to your dealer tyson. Every F150 I've seen has a perfect gas cap that matches the rest of the truck perfectly. I think 3 out of 4 owners don't even have a clue it's plastic.
