Cool Help! Very Bad Fuel Mileage...

I purchased my 04- FX4 on January 11,2005 I now have 5610 miles on it. The best mpg I have ever had was 12.5 and that was on a trip. The other times are on average 11.2 mpg, I do not drive fast, or floor it, infact I probably drive it to slow. The truck did develope a bad engine miss around 4800 miles, and Ford re programmed the pcm, that seemed to fix the miss and I thought that might be the cause of the mileage, but that did not improve it.. Any Suggestions... I would appreciate very much.

It's not that bad for city driving, but if you said 12.5 for a highway? trip, then that's bad.

I get 12 or 13 mpg for city driving in my truck, and I have a performance intake and exhaust too. One highway trip so far and I got 17mpg.

The biggest gains I have seen so far are from E-fans and underdrive pulleys.

It is pretty much a cumulative thing though with perfromance mods. Any performance upgrades you do really shouldn't be to gain MPG, but instead to gain performance, as they will never pay for themselves.

I can tell you that I have seen some significant gains with the mods that I have installed, and mine is the heaviest of all the F150's (Lariat 4x4). (I should be posting shortly on my experience with the Troyer Stage 2 upgrades)

I have an 04 FX4 that I bought in Sept 03 I average 11.5 City 14 Maybe Highway with 35,000. I have only added a K&N filter for engine mods. Everything else was for sound & Looks. I just learned to make more money since I bought it. So now it doesn't hurt so bad.

04 FX4 SCrew, ~12mpg city, 17-18mpg hwy, and that was before exhaust (only real mod i've done so far). 3.73s on this heavy beast suck up the gas around town, but what else do ya expect?

Its amazing the mileage you guys are posting....I've got the SCrew 4X4 with 35" tires, 6" lift, and stock 3.55 gearing. I'm now averaging between 12-13mpg overall with just a shade over 14mpg on a highway trip. My mods are in the sig.

I get around 11.5 to 12 in town, I recently took a day trip and got 19.7 mpg. Took it easy never went above 70mph. 2004 5.4 with 2.55's. I was very happy with that after weeks of 11.5 mpg.

You must have meant 3.55's? I also got 19.7 on a day trip to GA. recently. I have a 4.6L with 3.55's and I was running around 68-70. But mine is also a reg. cab too, I don't know how much of a weight difference there is between the different models.

I'm getting the same mileage (as are many here)

I don't think there's anything wrong with your truck.

I think it's your foot.

Sorry to burst your bubble. I have had my beauty since Oct 03 and have about 14k on it right not. I have learned to STOP checking my fuel economy because it only agrivates me.

I continue to get about 10 in the city and 13.1 is the best I have gotten on the highway except for one trip (about 13.9).

I will drive this thing into the ground. Nothing I do, though, makes the fuel situation any better. I have added the exhaust and Retrax cover.

I did, however, speak with a freind of a freind that has the same truck. He consistantly got no better than 11 mpg until his odo hit about 25k. He said that once that happened he INSTANTLY got about 12-13 city and is now getting no worse than 17 highway. Fact or Fiction on something clicking instantly, I don't know. But I'm hoping.

Good luck and try to enjoy your truck like I am.

j150 - Trust me, it's not his foot. I use to baby this thing and there is nothing you could do. I would pay you $1,000 in cash if you would drive my truck and prove that you can get 17 mpg out of it on a highway.

My 04 Screw 4x2 Lariat with 3.55 gears has averaged 16-17 since I bought it in Nov 03. I have gotten as much as 21mpg on long trips. I haven't done any performance mods, just added a Leer tonneau, which may have added 1mpg. I have 19k on it now.

I get 11-14 with a rancho lift 35s and 4.56 gears. Most of my driving is around town. Having the 37 gallon tank helps with the time between fillups.

4x4's almost always get worse fuel milage than 2x4's. I have an '04 SCAB 2x4 w/5.4 and I average, in mixed driving, 16-17mpg. Also take into account that the 18" rims/tires on the FX4 adds to the rolling resistance and thus increasing drag.

Very little can be done to drastically increase mpg, and the cost of these mods may take months to recoup in fuel cost savings.

As hard as it may be just try to overlook this issue and focus on the perfomance, freedom, and peace of mind that your new truck gives you.

Haha...thats so true though. I used to be obsessed with calculating my mpg and constantly pressing reset and watching what the trip computer said about mpg. But now I've given up, it doesn't make a difference if I monitor it or not. The gas mileage blows beyond comparison, but if you let it consume your thoughts then it ruins the bliss of owning a new or new to you vehicle. Just don't think about it, ignorance is truely bliss.

I don't know why everyone cracks on the 4 bangers and ricers....heck let them drive those things. I say everyone drive their econo car and reduce the demand for oil, drive down the cost of gas for me. Save me money at the pump! (blissfully thinking again...try it with me...goosefraba, goosefraba!)
