That is a good sign but I question the accuracy of their results. I think the samples may be so small that a few very positive or negative responses can skew the results. In the latest car release, Hummer went from dead last to tied for 10th in a single year. I participate in the poll and don't feel the questions are objective in all cases.

The F-150 and Ranger have consistently ranked in the top group in the JD Powers study.

The Sport Trak and Ranger were ranked #1 and #2 in 2004s report also. And the F-150 was ranked in the top group.

The Ranger ranked #1 in the 2003 study, and so did the F-150, #1.

OSBORNK - I wouldn't say the dataset was terribly small. The release says...

The 2005 Initial Quality Study is based on responses from more than 62,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2005 model-year cars and trucks, who were surveyed after 90 days of ownership. This industry benchmark study for new-vehicle initial quality is now in its 19th year.

so does this mean that Ford considers the SportTrac a pickup now? I thought they wanted it lumped in the SUV category?

Secondly, the old Exploder frame that is under the Trac is a modifed Ranger frame. Powered by a Ranger engine. ANd yet its midsize while the Ranger is compact.

I dont get it.

No, the dataset is not small but the sample can be small for a particular vehicle if it does not sell in great numbers. Several very negative or positive responses would not have a significate impact on a high volumn vehicle like it would on a low volumn vehicle. I think that is why some of the corporate twins that are made on the same assembly lines with the same parts and the same workers at the same time will sometimes be so far apart on the charts.

That other survey is for the entire vehicle line-up...

What really sucks is the LR and Porsche numbers.. not like they are a high-volume company! D'oh!

well I disagree with it. Its nice that the F150 is #1, but I disagree with JD Power methodology.

Sorry. First 90 days is a BS measure of quality. Its a measure of final fit and finish/dealer prep.

I would rather see complaints after 3-5 years along with total dollars spent in repairs for a better sense of quality.

Wanna know how to scrrew with the JD Powers numbers? Do like Hyundai did last year to get on the list. Defer all warranty repairs until day 91. Suddenly you have ultra low initial 90 day claims.
