Question Transfer case and tranny fluids

I m curious..

WHat fluid did you put in your tranny and transfer case if you change it or plan to?

I might drain it both and put new Mobil one SYN fluids in before next Winter...but i ll do some more reseach on it first.

feedback would be great!

Mercon V is just a grade of Transmission fluid. There are a few different brands that have the Mercon V grade, but like Rocky said, that's the stuff for your tranny.
Not having a 4X4, I can't tell you what goes in the transfer case...Kevin

Brand X, Brand Y, or whatever...just make absolutely sure it's Mercon V.

+1 for Mercon V. Don't really matter what brand it is, use whatever floats your boat, as long as it meets Mercon V spec.

Don't use Mercon V in your transfer cases!
FYI, May 18, 2007

To: All Ford, Lincoln and Mercury Dealerships
Subject: MERCON Automatic Transmission Fluid To Be Discontinued

BACKGROUND
Effective July 1, 2007, the production and licensing of MERCON Automatic Transmission Fluid will cease. These actions are not exclusive to Motorcraft and affect all producers of MERCON. MERCON V provides significant performance improvements over MERCON especially with transmission shift performance at low temperatures and anti-shudder.

SERVICING FORMER MERCON APPLICATIONS

Automatic Transmission, Power Steering Systems and Manual Transmissions previously requiring MERCON must now be serviced with MERCON V
Transfer Case Systems previously calling for MERCON must now be serviced using Transfer Case Fluid, part number XL-12, specification # ESP-M2C166-H (release and TSB pending). Power steering systems listed in TSB 07-1-7 can continue to be service with Premium Power Steering Fluid, XL-9 or F7AZ-3F823-BA (specification # WSA-M2C195-A).
Ford does not recommend the use of any products that do not meet the above specifications or ATFs that claim to be the equivalent of MERCON or being acceptable for these applications.
PART NUMBERS TO BE OBSOLETED

XT-2-QDX MERCON Quart bottles
XT-2-DDX MERCON 55 Gallon Drums
XT-2-TDX MERCON Totes
XT-2-BDX MERCON Bulk
NEW PART NUMBER RELEASED EFFECTIVE AUGUST 1, 2007

XL-12, Motorcraft Transfer Case Fluid Quart is scheduled for release August 1, 2007.
Please see your Motorcraft Ford Authorized Distributor or Bulk Oil Distributor for availability
PART NUMBERS NOT AFFECTED BY THESE CHANGES

XL-9 Power Steering Fluid

Most universal ATF meets ESP-M2C166-H specs. Mercon V will not hurt the transfer case, there are no soft parts in it.

I used Mercon V when I changed the fluid in my transfer case. I changed it at 50k and was surprised how bad the old fluid looked. I'm changing it every 20k now.

I use Mobil 1 ATF, just changed my filter and fluid yesterday. Third change in 87k miles total. The fluid was a little brown but otherwise didn't smell burnt etc. No evidence of any major metal on magnet. Works fine last a long time.

Here's a question: anyone know why my LFD wants $140 to do transfer case service, telling me the "kit" costs $85 or so", when all you do is drain, plug and refill?
I know they charge a lot for labor....just wondering if there is something else that they typically do when performing this service, that justifies the cost.
thanks

I'm not aware of any "kit" required. The only materials required are 2 quarts of fluid.

Maybe they were talking about the transmission? $85 sounds about right for a filter and gasket.

Mercon V was found to damage clutch material in transfer cases with auto 4WD. If you have a 2wd, 4wd high and 4wd low, it won't cause a problem, but Ford puts out a blanket policy to avoid confusion. I use Mobil1 ATF without problem in the transfer case. For the Transmission, any Mercon V will work.
