Aftermarket Tachometer installation
Aftermarket Tachometer installation
Like to know if there is an existing lead behind the dash for
a tachometer.
Can't live without seeing my RPM's.
Sometimes I brush up against the O/D off button and can't
hear the engine over George Strait.
a tachometer.

Do search on tachometer and cluster.
I swapped in an FX4 cluster, and got a Scanguage, both of which give the RPM's.
You can put in a good quality aftermarket tach, but you need to also put in a 60+ dollar adaptor.
There's also a cute trick with the information center to display a tach, until you shut the truck off.

check out speedut.com they sell a tach that supposedly does not need the adaptor, and it is fully customizeable and fairly inexpensive. I may go that route myself with some other gauges to match.

It's nice looking, very nice with some of the options, but where does it mount? Might put the smaller 'butt' of it through the coin holder hole, but I can't tell from their site.
It's also an 8 grand tach. It would be nice if they offered a 6000, which would make sense on a truck that shifts at 5000 with a Superchips...
Still, it's a viable option.

Hi Chris
You are right 200.00 isn't cheap but If your looking for something other than generic, I've seen some of the nicer tachs for well over 300.00 and you don't have to shell out the extra 60.00 or 70.00 for the adaptor, so they say anyway. Personally, We all have very nice trucks so for me I want a nicer tach but not for 325.00 or more.
Can I ask your advise on tach installs when I get closer to doing the mod? If so my e-mail is idrivegt@comcast.net You seem to be the interior component guy. I like what you did with the power windows.

I found some very nice Autometer Tachs for about 69 bucks, on e-bay, but with lower redlines. Add that to the 40 is about 109. The big pretty base unit on the speedhut is 209. Shipping is about a wash.
Dunno, pays your money, takes your choice.
Mounting it somewhere that isn't the center tray is always the problem in these trucks. I notice Autometer has a two gauge dash surface mount unit, 15312, supposedly for this truck, that I can't find a picture of anywhere. Wonder where it fits?
On the tach, a guy named redstx or something like that, don't think he's active, managed to put a tach in that didn't need an adaptor, but dunno the odds of matching his feat.
I of course cheated with my two tachs, but am always interested in any new trick or method.
Have a great one,
Chris
