Calling all 04-05 f150 owners with SCT Tunes

Im just curious, did you guys have to get a 1 step colder plug, and a 1 step cooler thermostat? Anyone know what the stock heat plug and thermostat is? Most tuners if not all recommend that you install 22c plugs and 180 T-stat to keep detonation to a minimum. Just havent seen anyone mention it for the 04+ trucks. After some searching, these trucks use special plugs, but not sure on the heat range.

Neither as they were not recommended by the tuner. So far, there has been one brief instance of detonation, and the engine wasn't up to temp...Kevin

hmm, do these trucks use 192 or 180 Tstats from the factory? I know for my bird 22c plugs and 180 tstat is recommended, (stock is 32PP plugs and 192 Tstat) so you get less detonation and can get a little more timing. Jerry W Recommends it, most of the MD guys recommend it for mustangs. If you run a blower, 2 step colder plugs. But then again these trucks are setup differently than my old 2v bird is.

These trucks use a 192 t-stat. Going to a lower t-stat will hurt performance. DONT DO IT.

if you wanna go with higher octane and a cooler t-stat, get an ignition booster of some kind. I did and I love it.

On cars it might be a different story, because going 1 step lower, reduces combustion chamber temps, thus allowing more timing in the motor. When u run a tune/chip, you are advancing the timing, creating more spark. The cooler plugs and thermostat help keep the temps down and keeps detonation to a minimum. Ill post a link from Blueovalchips.com explaining why, Lonnie Doll runs this site, and he and Jerry W know each other. Question #12

ignition booster, all it does is provide a secondary ground

Asinatra,

Are you basing that on the wiring of the booster? I see how you might get that because it doesnt hook up to a hot wire of any kind really. it just splices into the coil wire and it has a ground, so where does the power come from...right?

However, not so. It cycles through the booster. The coils are actually hot wires.

Yeah i know the coil wire is "hot" and all it does is provide a secondary ground with more conductive wiring which makes the sparks more efficient. So the electicity has two paths and finds the fastest to ground. Its based of the same fact that if you combine all your grounds toegther you get more HP. They are also expensive, but because people beleive that its something special they can sell it for way more than its even worth.

But you can argue with me all you want, cause if i didnt know and spent 250bucks i would argue only because i wasted 250 on something so simple.

Well, if I could wire one up with some Radio Shack parts and warranty the item (just in case something happened)....I probably would. You cant warranty something you designed yourself and installed on your own vehicle.

Either way, the item helped, I like it. 250.00 is a bit steep, but so are rims and tires. All you get out of rims/tires are turning heads. I could flip someone off for free and get them to turn their head.

Point.....if you want higher octane tuning, and a better powerband, buy the ignition booster.

This hobby aint cheap and any gains proven are worth the money to me.

wheel and tire, stock i got 235 seriers vs the 285 i have now, so i got a tad more traction for launch and the turns w/ less tire roll in the turns

my wheels and tires are for me, turning heads i can use the siren or pa if i am bored.
