Loud clunks?
Loud clunks?
I was driving down some snow covered logging roads this weekend and my truck made some loud disturbing noises. I was driving up a slight incline from a stop when I heard about five lound "clunks" ( about 5 in a row with about 3 seconds inbetween each) comming from under the truck. A few minuts later again from a stop I started and there was only one loud clunk this time. Since the rest of the half hour drive I was on was under the same conditions and this never occured again and hassent happened since. Just wondering if anyone has any idea's as to what could be causing/have caused these noises? and infor/idea's would be appreaciated.

I have the same problem. My friend had his ?solenoid and wheel hub (whatever deals with the 4x4) replaced. In 2wd it sounds like you are dragging a 10' steel pipe underneath. The banging is it kicking in and out of 4wd. My 4wd went out becaue of that going up a snowy narrow steep driveway pulling a trailer. That was fun. I can get it to kick in if I floor it and get it to spin, then bang bang bang clunk, its in 4x4 until I let off the throttle. When I have time I am taking it in for that and other problems.
It's been a while since I can find a thread similiar to this. My truck is not only giving me the "clunk" noise on occasion in four wheel, but it sometimes doesn't engage four wheel. It will eventually lock in after some time but it can often take a mile or so to lock in and then when it does I'll get this "clunk" sound if I'm pulling a hill or something where I need a lot of torque on all four wheels.
Had it in to a mechanic that I trust, but they can't find anything wrong and even rode with me on some dirt hills in 4X4. Of course, when he rides with me the truck instantly engages 4 wheel drive and has no clunk...
Anyone have any updates on this situation?
Thanks!

Yes, its the vacuum solenoid. It requires vacuum to pull it into 4 wheel drive. They really didn't question me, they knew there was a problem with them and changed it. Just tell them to test the vacuum solonoid and forget the stinkin road test. However if they do demand a test, do this.. Go somewhere slippy. Somewhere you know you can spin. put it in 4 wheel drive and give it hell. Thats when it will start clunking and banging and popping.
