Check with your local state laws. Some states they are illegal. Yes they do affect brightness at night. Most of the kits I've seen only pass 85% or so of the light through which in turn means you will loose 15% of your brightness.

Call me crazy but you have to be wrong. How would Ford be able to sell the HD with black headlights if it was illegal in any state?

The HD lights are OEM.

Check out this site...
http://www.expertlaw.com/library/con...cessories.html

Also when you order them from JC Whitney they state:
"For show use only. Check local laws to determine if covers are legal in your area."

No way!

I'm saying buy the Ford HD headlights and you wouldn't have a bit of problem since apparently they are DOT approved.

He's not asking about blackout kits/headlight covers, he's asking about the headlights like in the HD trucks. They have a clear lens and the reflector is still shiney, the only thing black is the surround thats chrome looking in normal F-150's. I dont see any reason these would be illegal.

BTW, check Ebay, there are always a bunch listed on there

There are 2 separate things being mentioned here (I believe). The black "light covers" cover up the light and are illegal at night. The black Harley D lights are just lights with the trim painted black instead of chrome which obviously wouldnt be illegal

Common mistake, maybe I should have explained alittle better, but thanks guys for all the info, I had an 01 f150 with the blackout kit and I dont want to back with that so I wanted to look into the HD lights, I think they look awesome.
