Tonka grill pics

If this is a repost I am sorry, but I haven't seen it around on the boards in a few months. Wish I knew the site that was making it, but I just saw it on ebay. Anyway I know there aren't a ton of options for grills right now so though I would throw this one in the mix......

Tuscany Conversion

I saw one of these Tuscany Conversions "Tonka Trucks" at my dealer last week (MSRP ~$50K+).

The custom guy that sold me our E250 Tuscany Conversion Van said lots of folks want the grill only, but Tuscany owns the patent and they aren't going to sell them.

So, it looks like that is one of the nicest grills available for an F150, but it probably won't be available for aftermarket purchase. At least not yet anyway.

Bummer...I like it!

fx4scab 12-14-2004 06:05 PM

What/?...That really blows. I had my mind set on getting it already. Guess I'll have to settle for the other.
Man........I really like that though!

FX4Play 12-14-2004 06:41 PM

I have faith ebay will come up with a copy of the grill soon enough, assuming there is the demand

Nico 12-14-2004 06:52 PM

*DROOL*

Man I want that. And Im not even a fan of tons of chrome, but that looks cool.

Rockpick 12-14-2004 07:20 PM

Can you patent a design if it serves no purpose other than asthetics?

Also, a patent takes a long while to push through the system.

A quick search at www.uspto.gov for Tuscany yeilded nothing 'truck' related. *shrugs*

You don't need a full patent, just a patent pending will keep people from duplicating the design. That's of course you can get the patent in the first place.:smoke:

RP,

I am not sure about the "patent". That is just what the custom van/truck guy at my dealer told me...

I emailed Tuscany Custom Vans / trucks and asked about their "patented Super Duty look-a-like grill." They don't even have a 2004 F150 on their own website www.tuscany-vans.com, but they do have some pics of their 1997-2003 models http://www.tuscany-vans.com/trucks/f-150-options.php

Who knows, maybe they'll start selling the new grill separately (especially if they get alot of requests???

Will let ya'll know if I hear back from them. :lurk:

Right.... that's what I was wondering.

Doesn't it have to show functionality and not just asthetic value? I'm no patent lawyer but, it seems like a patent on something like that would be a stretch...

Who knows though...

I like the grill but it would be better with out the ford logo in the middle, which is the main reason why i replaced my frill with the billit version.
Just my 2 cents, which is worth about 1 cent to all my fellow Americans. :)

I saw one of those grilles in my december issue of truckin' magazine. The company is AIM Industries the price is $199. Its on page 176 if interested.

beaver.25 12-15-2004 04:43 PM

I dont think the grille in the magazine was chrome.

J-150 12-15-2004 05:32 PM

I dont think they can patent it.

If it looks like the Tonka grill, then Ford technically owns it. And I think at that point its not patent but a trademark.

The next one to knock one off just has to make enough changes to it and they can sell the same thing.

The phrase 'Patent Pending' means exactly what it says, that a patent has been filed on the intellectual property or design, it doesn't prevent anybody from duplicating the design...it just helps you with your legal defense if you actually get the patent approved in the end and want to claim royalties from those who profited from copying you after you notified them that you had filed a patent.

The trademark on "Tonka" has no impact on appearance...that is literally a protection of the brands name. Dodge can build a truck that 'looks' just like an F-150, but they can't call it an F-150 because 'F-150' is a Ford trademark.

beaver.25 12-17-2004 07:40 AM

Anyone found out more news on these grilles? Someone needs design one for sale to the public.

not if the "look" is close enough to the trademark that it could be considered trademark infringement.

Also, the name is a funny thing. Toyota and Ford sued each other a few years back over names. Toyota wanted to call the Tundra a T150 and Ford had the LS8.

SO I guess like we discussed in a nasty thread a few days ago, the law is subject to interpretation and a judge deciding how close to infringement a name or object is.

ChrisAdams 12-17-2004 09:52 PM

I don't go for bling bling, if it doesn't do something or make it go faster, I don't want it.
Ok, maybe a little.

That is one sweet looking grill. First cosmetic only thing I have wanted for my truck.
They have got to want to sell these.
Chris

speaking of grills. Is it possible to swap a Lariat grill for a FX4 grill. I like the FX4 grill the best of any option.

FOUND THE GRILL

Guys, I found that grill.
There a company called justbilletgrills.com (a subsidiary of aim industries) that sells the grill for like 199 (tax & shipping). Check out Truck'n magazine for ads, or hit up my email; for more info if needed. I put it on my truck (its billet, no polished yet) & it looks tough. I will post pics when I can.
Big Mike

dzervit 02-15-2005 10:32 AM

That web site is no good... try again!

bigmike899 02-15-2005 10:46 AM

Sorry, typo on the website.
http://www.justbilletgrilles.com/
you can see a picture of it in Truckin' magazine. Truckin has em in the aim industries ads in each issue. Justbilletgrilles.com is a subsidiary of AIM industries. Their phone number is 1-800-289-9980, they dont have a pic on thier website as of yet, but its in the magazine.

dzervit 02-15-2005 10:48 AM

That website does blow! Guess I'll have to get the mag today, last day on the stands!!

bigmike899 02-15-2005 11:05 AM

Yeah, theyre website blows. The guys arent the brightest bulbs in the box who work there, But they have the grill. I had to tell the guy on the phone to open the magazine and look for it. Its not even close to polished when it gets to you. Its also still rough around the edges. Theyre are 2 tabs welded onto the sides that you basically just bolt over ur existing grill. When I have time & when its warmer out, im gonna take the whole thing apart & redo it. I have 2 self-tapping screws holding it on right now. You need to pull your old ford emblem off the old grill & bolt it onto the new one. And, of course, youre gonna break off at least 1 post of the emblem backing (like i did), but it will hold with just reusing 1 speed nut!

Beefullo 02-15-2005 12:39 PM

$200 for a BOLT OVER grille? Not in a million years. I am annoyed at having to pay $18o for a FULL replacement upper AND lower!

That's ridiculous.

dzervit 02-15-2005 01:44 PM

Supply & Demand Beef-man. I think it's outragous as well, but that may look pretty hot on the front of the 'ol Tan Terror. Hmmm... then again, I could just fab one up!

bigmike - is it too much to ask to take pics of the front and rear? Oh wait... you said you already put it on.. dagnabit!

bigmike899 02-15-2005 03:29 PM

lol dzervit,
I got my g/f a digital camera, and when she opens it today (when i give her her gifts), i will get her to take pictures sometime this week. I will try to upload it as soon as i can. Worses comes to worse, I will post them when I get back to ny early next week.
Its not the best looking piece (from far it looks tough as anything), but once you get close, its a lil rough like I said, and needs to be polished alot. I left it plain for now, but will work on i when it gets warm. As far as the mounting, it is a bolt over (2 tabs, 1 on each side) & it bolts to the inside of the existing grill. I dont care much for the install/mounting of it. If youre in it for the looks, then it works. I just hope it holds to the grill.

tonka grill

Just ordered the tonka grill from aim industries. I ordered the grill in polished :)

fx4scab 02-19-2005 05:11 PM

Please show some pics when you get it installed. I'm curious to see this on a regular F-150. :D Is it overlay or a solid grill? Let us know the scoop. Thanks

crownvic 02-27-2005 06:44 PM

Yes, I would like to know more about this also! Please let us know as soon as you get it!!!

Ed753 02-28-2005 10:33 AM

WOW that is sweet, the hood is a bit much!

Makes the 2005 F-250 in the background look oh so dated.

MRBIG 02-28-2005 10:55 AM

I didn't think it was out there yet but aim industries does have it.

2004 - 2005 FORD F150 OE-1/4"ALUMINUM HORIZONTAL TONKA GRILL

:smoke:

beaver.25 03-17-2005 12:10 PM

Does AIM Industries only have the brushed aluminum looking tonka grille? I would rather the chrome look like in the picture at the beging of the thread.

bribas1 03-18-2005 01:40 AM

This is the link to the AIM Industries website for this grill but no pic...

I like the look of the grill but can't find many pics on it. I was thinking of getting the 6 piece bolt over but now I'm not so sure.

I wouldn't mind purchasing but would like to see more before I commit $200 on it.:help:
